There are two "must read" books for fledgling copywriters. OLGIVLY ON ADVERTISING and TESTED ADVERTISING METHODS by John Caples. As has been mentioned in the sticky ... 4th edition or earlier on "Tested"

David Olgivly was with George Gallup in the very early days of Gallup Polling and went on start and run the largest ad agency in the world and Caples was an Annapolis grad who went back to a book called Scientific Advertising (OK -- maybe there is a third!) and built an extraordinary career as a copywriter without sacrifing his bent for math and science. Of course there are other books that have value but these two make up a foundation that really can't be beat.

While you should write the first draft of your copy after reading both books you should also hire the best copywriter you can find (I do not mean a guy that designs websites) and retain him for four or five hours to make it much better. Do the grunt work and let the pro bring it to a better place.

i'm currently about halfway through paul hancox's mentoring program, and it's excellent. while some people learn just fine by reading books and practicing on their own, i wanted someone to help guide me, be there for my questions, and critique my copy and point out areas i need to improve.

i cannot recommend this course enough!!

This and Victor Schwab's book are two that I really like. Instead of a whole book on theory, there is actual advice in there.

A lot of the books I've read have a lot of Why, and What. But not enough How.

Caples Tested Advertising is good too, but I like the others first for someone new like me.

Dan Kennedy's book is good too as a real basic starter. Then again I try to read anything by Kennedy as there is always marketing related nuggets in there (not just copy).

Micheal Mastersons "Accelerated Program for Six-Figure Copywriting" is a very good course to start with. Not cheap but worth it.
