Where do you think the average Joe/Joan wants to see ads...

It's not where you think. At least not where most in here think it is. Late last year Adobe released a report on the state of online advertising. Below is an interesting factoid:

#ads #average #joe or joan

What a strange survey. I bet the follow up question was, "where would you prefer to be punched -- face or gut?"

Interesting they left out direct mail all together.

    Interesting data...

What people prefer and what they respond to is not always the same...

I almost expected there to be a category of "I don't prefer to see ads anywhere."

      This may help...

The question was: Which of the following adjectives would you use to describe online advertising?

The cut off part stated "Never seen an online advertisement."

      That's for sure.

Which advertising platform gives me an acceptable ROI? And which other platforms can I successfully scale my campaign to, if any? Those are two questions I want answered.

The "blue" bars are MARKETERS responses.

The "green" bars are CONSUMER responses.

It's not what people (consumers or marketers) prefer.

It's what consumers respond to that counts.

They laughed at Christopher Columbus' theory that the earth was round.

They laughed at Chester Greenwood's earmuffs.

They laughed at Henry Ford's Model T.

They laughed at Matt Drudge's news portal website.

Today people are laughing at social media marketing and mobile marketing.

              Keep laughing...

Totally serious. How does stated consumer preference correlate with consumer behavior?

            What am I missing?

You're not missing anything. The results of that study show absolutely ZERO correlation between stated preference and behavior.

Kind of reminds me of the old Gary Halbert saying about how the direct response industry is a something-something billion dollar industry.... yet no will ever admit to ordering anything from an infomercial or sales letter.

    People are liars.

In fact, there may actually be an INVERSE correlation between stated preference and effectiveness of the media. Think about it: Why would customers prefer to see ads in magazines and newspapers? Because they are easier to IGNORE!

The TV thing threw me - who in their right mind would PREFER to see ads on TV? But then I realized most of the people answering the questions are probably Tivoing and zipping right past the ads.

The reason people ranked social media/internet ads so low is because it's more difficult to skip/ignore those ads, at least right now.

    That's my theory.
