How Layout and Design can Lower Conversions...

I noticed a thread the other day that Subtle posted on...

http://www.warriorforum.com/copywrit...vertorial.html

and like always, his design advice was spot on.

And it reminded me of how when I send clients copy... I also STRESS to them to make their design simple, clean, clear, uncluttered... like editorial articles.

Because I can send them killer copy, and they can murder it with crap design.

I even tell them to go look at Apple.com as an example of a billion dollar
company who "gets" design.

And I also send them some Agora examples to check out, so they can see how multi-million dollar companies also do their design and layout.

To me, great design and layout should almost go unnoticed... and let the message stand out and "pop".

Like what Eugence Schwartz said about copy...

"Words in advertising are like the windows in a store... you must be able to look right through them and see the product."

I feel the same about design... that it should almost be unnoticed and really enforce the product copy.

Today, with peoples' attention spans literally down to almost nothing... the best way to get noticed is to make it easier... and you gotta get through the clutter and have your message stand out.

So, like Subtle posted... make your copy look more like an editorial message and not like a sales message or ad.

You can never go wrong with simple, clean, clear, and uncluttered.

Of course, test a few different layouts and designs to see which works best... and I understand that different markets and products may have different graphical needs, but you can still make it clean, simple, and clear.

The more you can make your site look like Google and less like Yahoo... you'll be doing fine.

Jesus Dude... you should launch a WSO - "How to Spam the Copy Forum with Spurious Advice Designed to Get Your Sig Noticed". It's like a free for all for you and Pescetti.

I just remembered why I'm sick of this forum.

    Give it a break huh?

This coming from a guy with almost 3,000 posts?

Dude, unlike you who simply come on here to shit on people, at least Mark and I are helping some folks... you are literally nothing but a negative suck on people.

Oh, and Mal, I'll listen to the 10 to 15 people who email me or message me each day... telling me how much my free advice has helped them.

I'll take that over some old disgruntled forum poster who does nothing but shit on people.

If I had listened to the naysayers when I started, I wouldn't have lasted 14 years online...

This is a pure self-promotional piece not very well disguised as commentary of another thread. So the question is - why haven't you just commented on that thread huh? The answer is obvious - so you can post yet another thread going on about what a marketing genius you are. You think I'm the only one who's noticed this? It's all about you isn't it? Your 14 years in the business... your so-called advertising agency... this campaign/that campaign... yada yada yada. And all the time not adding anything new - just rehashing the same old shit that's been posted here over and over.

BTW I don't just give advice around here - I rewrite people's copy for them - for free. And they thank me for it. Wanna see my fan-mail? I'd put it up against yours any day. A "negative suck on people"... "old disgruntled forum poster". Uh huh. What a presumptuous little twerp you are. Any of my copy would blow your swiped rubbish out of the water.

Well, my "swiped rubbish" made me a millionaire at 32 years of age... and built me a very busy advertising agency.

But Mal... you keep posting your 3,000 posts here on the WF... and bash people in the process... whatever makes you feel important.

Gosh, I would have never thought that a bunch of millionaires would go on an online forum and bash each others heads in. Kind of reminds me of watching a professional football game!

    Shawn,

You misinterpret Mal's posts. It's honest feedback.

Right now, he's giving YOU honest feedback. You may not have asked for it, you may not like it, but you got it anyway. Because this is a public place and you're promoting yourself.

When it comes to feedback, not only does Mal say "This sucks dogballs", he says why. Then, if he's in a decent enough mood, he'll tell you how to improve it. And then, if you respond favorably to his comments/criticisms, he'll give you a couple specific ways to improve.

If that's being negative, I'll take that punishment all day long. Public or not, pour it on.

    - Rick Duris

PS: If you really have read the books Mastery and Jobs, you know what I'm saying is true. To a copywriter, experienced and otherwise, good, honest, clinically-accurate feedback is tough to come by.

As much as it stings, Mal's got it in spades.

He's giving you his perspective. My opinion is you might want to consider it as really helpful feedback rather than an insult.

I was going to respond (or react) since I was included in the criticism (in Mal's original post.) But I stepped back. Long story short, I appreciate it.

I have a swipe file from a few years ago that was put out by a famous copywriter...it's full of million dollar sales letters...some of the best that have ever been written.

So happened I was reading one a couple weeks ago and thinking it was really good. Got to the end and seen it was written by Shawn.

Anyone that has been as successful as Shawn is worth listening to.

Millionaire by his early thirties. His own ad agency...

so I'm quite sure Shawn has a full grasp of things and probably doesn't need someone to decipher what was meant in a post.

I don't know Shawn personally and I've never met him, but, I'm quite sure we can all learn a thing or two from him.
