HERE! I have some information on inducing impulse buys...{More PROFIT}

I do a lot of marketing/consulting work for various websites and offers.

My field of expertise is persuasive/emotional marketing via psychology (This stuff borders manipulation sometimes but it works.)

anyway, I just wanted to share a few tips on impulse buying.

Here's why...

I can just about instantly increase a websites revenue by 50% or more using influence tactics that nudge consumers towards impulsive purchases.

We test this by sending media traffic (banners, direct buys and PPC on a small scale) to two different websites.

Site A includes the impulse schematic and site B doesn't.

Almost always site A, which incorporates "the tricks" beats out site B.

Please keep in mind, especially if you are a newbie, I would argue that upwards of 60% (probably much much more) of all your PROFITS are going to come from impulse buys.

Honestly just check out the WSO section, you had no intentions on buying that oto...did you??, but you couldn't resist...

And those oto's are where the sellers profits come from. That frontend $9.97 product is a loss leader.

So it's in their (and your) best interest to setup a solid, hard hitting backend that offers multiple higher priced items for sell. Thats how you profit from impulse buys.. Thats how you get rich.

My point is, you should always learn the basic and advanced skills of persuasion. And most of your marketing should appeal to emotions with about 5% appealing to logic/reason.

Here are a few ways I get customers to make impulse buys.

* Loss Aversion: Everyone has an innate concern with the avoidance of feeling bad in the future and/or avoiding a loss. Use that Idea to increase impulse buys.

EX. Here's a quick way I increased profits for a relatively small dating site over 90 days by $12,000+ compared to the previous 90 days.
We implemented a coupon that was only good for 4 hours. Here's the common feedback we received from the customers "I dont have the money for this, but there's a sale, and its only good for 4 hours, if i dont buy now, I'll miss out on this super cheap price". So in order to avoid the loss -- They purchased.

* Self fulfilling prophecies: Tell your customers what you expect of them. They will begin to believe it and embody it (whether its positive or negative -- so keep it positive). Once they believe it, they will start taking steps to live up to it -- and now their mind is more susceptible to persuasion and impulse buying.

EX. I did some work for HUGE weight loss newsletter. Over the course of 4 days I basically used different ways to say the same thing. Essentially I said "I expect you to lose around 11 pounds minimum, as long as you take these pills at the right time to maximize your results"

Two things happened..One, I created a self fulfilling prophecy, i expect them to lose weight by taking the pills, therefore they must obtain (i.e. purchase) the pills in order for that to happen. Also, I created major curiosity by telling them to take the pills at the right time to maximize their results...In orderto learn the right time (and why that time is so important) they had to click through and read the sales page.

to simplify this one (I feel like it still sounds complicated) heres a very simple self fulfilling prophecy .. " A teacher says that he expects you to do a great job on your test because he knows how hard hard you've prepared. In reality, you know that your study time has been spent playing games, texting and drinking. However, in an attempt to live up to the expectations set by your teacher, you cancel tonight's bar hopping and you study, so that you can do a great job on your test.

The point -- You can get people to do what you want them to do just by telling them that you expect them to do it...It's that simple and it works wonders on banner ads.

*Perfection Technique: this technique uses a subtle way to say "My product is the shit, those products you've been using in the past are horrible, so buy mine or suffer the consequences"

it goes like this -- Product A is what you use now and the results you have achieved have been sub par so far. Product B is the perfect solution for {insert target audience}, Therefore, Product A is not good enough and its a waste of your time and money.

EX. Use a lot of bullets or a comparison chart to do ALL of the following : exaggerate your product benefits/exaggerate the weaknesses of your competitors products/ undermine the strength of your competitors product/and undermine your own product weaknesses...

Entice Pity: make your product a condition by which if not purchased and used, a negative consequence will take place and destroy their life. Sounds pretty bad right....

EX. I can't take full credit for this, I worked along mr. Jon B. on a major clickbank weightloss product. In the newsletter follow up we enticed pity by using these exact words..

"{Name}, I know you've tried losing weight before, but soon you'll be faced with a stressful situation that could change your life forever. You see, summer is quickly approaching and if you dont figure out a way to lose weight pretty much IMMEDIATELY ...you'll have to figure out a way to keep your spouse from eyeballing the mass influx of "summer hotties" that are sure to magically appear in a few months..."

I took pity on them trying to lose weight in the past. And the possibility to of their spouse noticing the hotties vs his wife. (keep in mind, these leads were acquired from high profile marriage & family sites)

The inclusion of that message increased our CTR by email 29% when compared to the emails which did not use the message. But even better, it led to an ultimate conversion rate of 9.67% on lukewarm traffic. (not sure what the rate is now, but it was awesome at the time)

Entice Flattery: Your customers love to be flattered. And they will do almost anything to avoid going against the flattering comment you give them. So use this thought to mentally place your customer in between a rock and a hard place where the outcome leads to them taking action to avoid looking bad.

In simple terms tell them a person with such high qualities would never let an offer like this pass them by.

EX. In one of my own personal CPA campaigns (niche dating) I sent my list a series of emails and in the last email i said this: "Surely, an amazing guy as smart and hardworking as you, deserves to date a woman who most would consider "To HOT for TV" not just the normal basic chicks you see on most sites." Yes, I ran the risk of losing sales because most men believe the "basic chicks" are EASY (if you get my drift). But because I explained that they are amazing, smart and hard working it would have been an admittance of low self esteem and self doubt if they did not give this offer a try. I did roughly around $8,000+ in 2 months with a simple lander.

Here's the last one, its kind of obvious I guess...

* I call it The ease effect: Basically instead of admitting and dealing with the fact that we are lazy procrastinators we'd much rather purchase a product that will give us instant results without the work.

So with that in mind...(This works really well in the IM niche), Dont talk much about the work involved to get results, and definitely stay away from mentioning their lack of motivation. Instead, tell them "you dont have time to put in a bunch of long hours and hard work. And you most certainly cant afford to sit around all week waiting for slow results...Thats a good recipe for failure in this niche. But wouldn't you agree that it'll be much more Easy{lucrative/effective/fun} if you could instantly have {major result} right now -- with little effort....{Go into product pitch}

Basically you just told them that their life will be horrible if they continue with their current activities. but you have a much easier solution -- one that will bring many great rewards and results. Exactly what everybody wants right.

Well, Those are a few ways to increase impulse buys with psychology (I guess they increase purchases in general :p ).

Remember, armed with the power of emotions you can turn the vast amount of freebie seekers into hardcore purchasing customers.

Just learn the results your customers want. Then create a message that describes how your offer will help them get more of it or get it faster & easier.

P.S. Here's a PDF I found, I think its dated, but it still had some cool impulse buying studies in it.

Hopes it Help,

      Great Share!

      Thank you.

I'm guessing to benefit for the long term,
      using these strategies.

It is best to be offering quality products.

Rather than ones that give the customer little
      value.

      Thanks once again

To Be Honest....The product is the absolute LAST thing I or most of my associates worry about.

In my opinion, its all about the marketing. (how good you are at creating desire for your product).

Great marketing can sell millions of crappy products.

But poor marketing would be lucky to sell 1 amazing product.

        Hope that makes sense.

This online business isn't about who can create the best products, its about who can get the most people to desire their products (no matter the quality).

Just look at apple, they've managed to sell almost the exact same phone for 6+ years. It's because they do such a good job at marketing slight changes as the best thing mankind has ever experienced.

You can become a very wealthy person if you master just a tiny portion of this stuff.

Well my favorite book to read on selling is Solution Selling by Michael Bosworth.

For more "tricky" persuasive content you can read (covert persuasion) and (triggers).

BTW, my comment does not mean you should create a bunch of crappy products...I'm just saying good marketing can in fact sell bad products. HOWEVER, if the product is bad your customers might return once or twice (depending on how good your marketing is) -- but eventually they will divorce you and spread the word.

So then I guess the question now becomes -- what makes a bad product???

IMO, a bad product is one where you either (A)are teaching stuff that is much to advanced for the audience. or (B)You're teaching stuff that is much to amateur for the audience.

Either way you'll have a group of individuals who are highly disappointed.

With that in mind, you do not have to be a genius, or even a highly knowledgeable expert. You just need to know and tiny bit more than your audience does and sell it to them.

(a bad product is also one that doesnt live up to its promises.)

            Hope it helps.

As funny as that is, its very true.

It's also true in just about any other niche as well.

I think most people who struggle to make big money online are really clueless to what make this whole "internet thing" tick.

It's not the products...Its your ability to creatively tell a ton of people how said products will benefit them.

When done correctly, you will always be able to make atleast an above average income despite the status of the economy and despite the quality of your products.

It's all about using the right message, to market the right products at the right time. CREATIVELY!

But Apple also sells QUALITY and EXCELLENTLY designed simplistic products that even an infant can use it with little help. So, quality is very important along with great marketing techniques you shared.

Correct -- read the rest of the post... quality plus great marketing is ideal.
But if apple did not have the amazing marketing they once used when iphones and ipods were in their infancy, one could argue that they would be in a position that they are in today.

            Bottom line, great marketing rules

aren't all (well, at least most of them) sales pages and mailers structured this way? writing a great pitch usually involves emotional appeal and showing a perceived benefit of your product/service.

the key thing in any marketing effort, i think, is getting the word out. once you pass that hurdle, following the tips outlined by antonio would surely bring great results!

These things are practiced by a lot of marketers out there. For example, using scarcity, fear of loss, etc. These things can be used to increase sales, but they're pretty well known if you look at what was learned about marketing throughout the 20th century.

Still, good to see people sharing this stuff. It seems like the "marketing" concepts often get left out of the discussion.

The author is Kevin Hogan (Can't remember the co-authors name.)

That book as well as the other books mentioned above should definitely help to increase sells.

But really it boils down to your customers experience level and your ability to guide or steer them accordingly. The mastery of the previous sentence is how millions are made everyday.

      Here's what I mean.

Maybe your leads/prospects aren't aware that they have a problem. In this case, they WILL NOT be willing to purchase anything because they do not think they have a reason too. So its your job to make them aware of their problems and the negative effects that come with said problems. Then you can go into selling your products.

You also have leads that are aware of their problems, but they arent aware that any type of solution exists. So in this case, you want to do an amazing job of highlighting the benefits the lead will receive after they purchase and consume your product. You want to say things such as "This is how your life will improve..." or "Can you imagine if you had [result] and [result] with little or no work..." . Tell them how much their life will improve due to your product. Tell them what they will get out of consuming your product. Be extremely positive. And use A LOT of future pacing.

Lastly, You'll have customers who know they have a problem. And they believe a solution exists. But every solution they've tried in the past either didn't live up to its promises and it was a complete failure. Or the results were sub par. In this case you want to use well crafted stories to reframe your leads mind.

I have a technique that I call the FROM/TO technique. Basically, you want to tell a story that allows your lead to visualize their self going FROM rags TO riches. FROM a fat whale TO a sexy mermaid. FROM a single loser TO a guy with mad game that has women fighting to be with him. Get the point???

Tell stories by which the main character is starting from the worst possible position that a person in your niche could start from. If its the make money online niche -- Maybe he is poor, on welfare, no job, bills stacked to the ceiling ect ect. Then you want to highlight your product as his savior.
So in this case, once this dead broke guy consumed your product he had some sort of major breakthrough and his life was changed forever. and he got all the rewards/benefits/results that everybody else in your niche is dying to get.

Thats a much more condensed version of the From/To technique but its enough to give you an idea. Just get creative.

The best salesmen can sell people things they dont even know they need or want.

Remember, you can't effectively sell the maximum amount of products unless you know whats going on inside of your customers mind. Or if you can take control and guide whats going on in their mind.

Thats up to you to figure out.

Gotta go, sorry for the typo's lol.

    So with that in mind...(This works really well in the IM niche), Dont talk much about the work involved to get results, and definitely stay away from mentioning their lack of motivation. Instead, tell them "you dont have time to put in a bunch of long hours and hard work. And you most certainly cant afford to sit around all week waiting for slow results...Thats a good recipe for failure in this niche. But wouldn't you agree that it'll be much more Easy{lucrative/effective/fun} if you could instantly have {major result} right now -- with little effort....{Go into product pitch}

Copywriting is one useful tool to have in your back pocket. If you can use it to your advantage and make money off of it,you should always know and remember the fact that copywriting is a tough business that can be hard to take good care of.

The truth about copywriting is the fact that it is jot exactly the easiest thing to do on your own even if you do have experience, so you must be super careful when crafting a newsletter or salesletter.

GREAT THREAD! I think the op really hit home for me since there are certain parts of copy I needed to improve just one more time

I agree for the most part -- but copywriting is not very difficult. Most people just make it difficult because they aren't informed.

Essentially, you're explaining peoples problems in a vivid, clear and emotional way. You then go on to "Future pace" by telling them how amazing their life would be if said problems were eradicated. Then you clearly state any objections they might have and you overcome those objections. Discuss who your offer is/isnt for. Give them a unique guarantee and present your offer.

Of course you want to inject some scarcity, tell some stories, and beef up boring words by switching them with more explosive words. but thats the jist which will lead to a nice conversion rate.

From that point on you can start using more advanced tactics for higher rates, But for any beginner I would say this.

Why focus on getting higher conversion rates if you haven't even made your first sale yet. Do not let greed drive your actions -- Greed kills entrepreneurs on a daily basis.

I would also add that one should ever consider doing business in a market where they dont have experience or have not done an above average amount of research. If you have done those things then it wil not be hard at all to tell them why the need your products.

Unless your sub conscious doesn't fully back what you're promoting. Ie, you dont believe in the product, and if thats the case its damn near impossible to get anybody else to believe in it.
