Goal-Setting Like a Copywriter

Not sure if this belongs here or in Mind Warriors. What the hey, have it anyway...

A while back a friend of mine taught me a neat system for engineering goals and success. It goes like this:

Figure out what the end result should do for you. (the benefits)

Work out what features will be needed to realize those benefits.

Now figure out what real-world stuff needs to happen to make those features into reality.

Then, design a process for making it all happen.

It's exactly like how you come up with bullets & headlines, but in reverse!

It's similar, very similar to the goal setting formula from Think and Grow Rich. It's also similar to setting SMART goals.

I may add here "Now figure out what real-world stuff needs to happen to make those features into reality." ... create systems, repeatable systems like - work for five hours each day / read 30 minutes daily / exercise for 15 minutes daily / get coached in x two times per week instead of a step by step formula. Usually goals and step by step formulas are a no no.

Fascinating. The guy I learned it from... uses it to design cars!

30 years ago it was used extensively in workshops for persons with a disability. Take tying your shoe. There are 30 some steps before the final pull to make the shoe string tight. That sort of thing. This along with Try Another Way were in vogue back then.

In the 1950s my friend Harvey Brody created a process he refers to as THE VIEW FROM THE ROOFTOP. In Harvey's process the step off rung is the last step your take until you are on the roof. Follow the rungs of the ladder back to the bottom and you will see, step by step, rung by rung what needs to be done.

The hardest part for the vast majority is...step one, figuring out what the end result is. Or, what you want.

Something missing from most of these processes is ADJUSTMENT, what and how to get around or through obstacles, how to overcome the detours. Many of these types of systems are linear, a, b, c or 1, 2, 3 but life is more like curves, dead ends and detours of all kinds.

So build into your process the knowledge that s*it is going to happen and don't be alarmed when it does, you'll be better prepared for the journey.

The biggest hurdle, as often as not, is getting other people's cooperation. Few, if any, paths to success can be done without some help from other people.

PS. Sort of like, not exactly like coming up with copy elements, such as bullet points. The winning promotion begins with the action step of the reader (viewer, listener) what do you want them to do? ORDER? Call or mail? Click a link?

Now you can start the process of identification, who is this person, where do they intersect with your promotion? What is in it for them? Why would they take the action you want them to take? You can then, perhaps, reverse engineer your promotion to the attention/interest part, the deck copy mostly...but you must have a clear view from the rooftop, of who this person is and why they will want to take the action your brilliant words force them to take.
