Before You Buy a New Flatscreen, Tablet or Laptop Today

That was the subject of the email I received today as a subscriber
to Daily Reckoning. I don't know how many of you are subscribers
to get their swipe--not a bad idea. They are very good at piggy
backing on daily news and then sliding right into their sales message:

Dear Daily Reckoning Reader,

It's "Black Friday." Every major retailer in America counts on today to get their budgets "back in the black."

Turn on the TV today, and that's the only "black budget" you'll hear about. And while it may be fun to watch, we doubt it will make investors a penny richer this season.

Seriously: Have you ever made money because some crazed consumer got into a fist fight over the last Tickle Me Elmo?

Heh. Please

Luckily there is another "black budget" story that has a proven track record of making investors insanely wealth and you won't hear anything about it on CNN or MSNBC.

Nope. You can only learn about it right here.
Not a bad technique to follow especially when you send daily emails.

Frankly, when I saw your post... the only reason I clicked on it was so I could flag it as spam!

Then I realized you weren't actually hawking consumer electronics.

The spam kinda gets out of you after you are a warrior member for more than
      10 years.

Yeah, I had a feeling someone was gonna call me on that. "But we all know Ray's no spammer!"

Not my point though... if it looked like forum spam to me just from the headline, it's probably going to lose clicks when it hits a list's inboxes when people figure "aww, not another one..."

It IS a clever concept. And I could see it work great in a context where there's no "Spam Confusion Factor." Like, maybe as a space ad or flyer on Black Friday, newspaper-headline style.

But... as much as I respect Daily Reckoning, even if they somehow neglected to send me this particular message... I personally wouldn't use it for email.

Some people may regard it as a bait and switch situation, but they do
talk about the subject and then lead into their message so the subject
line is not really deceptive but an 'attention grabber'.

They do this all the time so I know this is a technique they have come
to 'own'. Whatever is in the news they use that story and then go into
their subject. I'm use to their style and know a few marketers who
send daily emails and use a similar technique.

Oh, I'm not taking issue with the "bait and switchiness" of the headline. What makes me wary is the keywords "flatscreen, tablet, or laptop"... these got my mental spam filter screaming, "IT'S SPAM, IT'S SPAM, IT'S SPAM" and I almost couldn't process the rest of the meaning of the headline!

Yes, using your own reaction to judge how your market will react is not necessarily wise. But... it still makes me wary.

Funny. Never occurred to me it might be spam. Guess I'm dense.
