Hello Friends!

Maverick here. I've recently entered the copywriting realm. I've posted a call to action on craigslist. Tell me what you think. Is this sorcery or copy magic?

    I enjoy scantily-clad, upside-down firewomen as much as the next guy, but I'm not sure they're relevant here.

    Make your offer more specific.

    What are you actually offering?

    Website copy? Sales letters? Postcards? And email campaign?

    Then give them an idea of what you can do for them.

    Mark Pescetti has posted some good stuff about finding clients through Craigslist.

    I've made a lot of money offering my copywriting services on CL over the years.

    I'd be shocked if your ad performed well at all.

    You're not demonstrating your ability to hone in on an avatar...

    ...or provide a clear CTA.

    You're not pre-qualifying.

    Start over.

    Make sure you tell people exactly what they need to go (and why.)

    P.P.S. You say "let the professionals handle it" - whatever IT is - but then you say "I." Don't try to look bigger than you are. Make sure people know it's just you.

      I appreciate your honesty! This is all new to me. I've found that learning is best achieved through DO-ing. Could you point me to some references that outline effective CL copywriting CTA's?

          You might want to be careful with the strip club reference and the girls who "Handle it"
          Unless you zero in on a market that accepts that. You might be offending some potential clients.
          We as copywriters are a little different breed.
          We don't offend easily because to get good, we rise above the white noise world and know there is good and bad; trashy and prim and proper; religious and atheist.
          It is just the way the world works.
          But many live in a world that says it is wrong; end of story!
          And, how dare you suggest she "Handles it" for me!

            Thanks for your feedback. I've been in the PR industry so I can see where this would backfire. I've put up this ad as a test in many respects. I've gained a lot of valuable feedback and the mere fact it was edgy has given me the opportunity to hear from those who wouldn't ordinarily respond. At the same time, categorically, this ad is a stone throws away from other sections of CL that solicit escorts and prostitutes -- sections that have existed for a very long time despite the morality -- so yes you are very right. Knowing your audience and the environment is extremely important. Do you know of a situation where being edgy has backfired?

              I know a lot of women who would be offended. And, some of them are business owners. If you are looking to pick up any jobs to build a portfolio, you might want to pull back just a bit.
              Don't get me wrong, I don't mind it.
              It is quite a shocker though.
              To the right market it will probably work.

    When I first clicked on your ad, I thought you were joking.

    You're advertising copywriting services but the writing looks like something out of a spam ad for a porn site. The picture doesn't help either. If you're good enough to charge people for your writing, why not take the time to write a good ad?

    Don't try to be funny
    Don't try to be clever
    Don't insult your audience

    a simple structure to try:

    If you're looking for x you've come to the right place.

    I understand your pain , blah blah

    here is why I'm the person to help you.

    here is why you need to act now. here is how you get in touch etc.

    Fast forward...one week later...not ONE person replied to my copywriting services. Great test. As Mark stated "I'd be shocked if your ad performed well at all." Well, he was right. The ad sucked. Back to square one...At this point all I can see is ZERO, no HERO in sight... Man, I got a lot of learning to do.

      I thought it was for erotic services.

      Bummer.

      And then to realize it was for copywriting, what a disappointment.

      Maybe you can guarantee your clients a "happy ending".
