What is a reasonably good conversion rate of a sale letter???

Some people on clickbank say they're converting at as high as 15%. I find that very hard to believe. But you never know. So do you think 5% conversion is realistic or not? The highest I've ever actually converted is about 2% and at the time I thought I was doing really good.

So again is a 5% conversion on a sale letter or VSL unrealistic or is the least I should be pulling? What are your thoughts?

    It can also depend on if it's cold traffic or warm traffic or to your current list. Your list will tend to convert much higher and I have heard of up to 15% to internal traffic. On the other hand I have heard 2% to cold traffic is also very good. So I guess it depends on your traffic source.

    A good conversion rate is one that's profitable.

    I've had a conversion rate as low as .80% on a sales letter that made me over a million dollars in profits. Why? Because I was getting very cheap traffic and had a strong enough sales funnel to make more than enough money, even with a low conversion rate.

    With large enough numbers and a traffic source that's cheap enough, even a sub 1% conversion rate can make a lot of money. These days, it's tougher... but it's still possible.

    I've seen conversion rates as low as .50% to cold traffic still return a profit.

    I've also seen conversion rates to warm traffic, like an endorsed mailing, that did 40% conversions.

    so, it's really dependent upon source of traffic. For me, it's more about return and profitability than it is conversion rate... but a LOT of marketers i know have become rich with conversion rates that were around 1 to 2%.

      Yep... you don't start with the conversion rate.

      You start with ROI.

      When planning your campaign, determine what you need to get back for each $1 spent to make an acceptable profit.

      Then factor in the cost of traffic.

      You can now calculate the conversion rate you'll need.

      (Once you go live, fine tune.)

    Personally I've had a sales letter that did over 15% conversion on
    cold traffic. And about the worst cold traffic you can imagine--safelists!
    But that is definitely the EXCEPTION and not the rule. But as Shawn
    said, profit is more important a measure than conversion rate. For an
    internet sales letter selling a sub-$100 product I'll say that 2-3%
    conversion on cold traffic is pretty decent.
