You Already Know More Than You Think You Know

Not too long ago, I put up a post about Archetype Resonance - where essentially - your story is what creates the connection for sales to amp up.

Funny thing...

A client from San Francisco came up to pitch another project to me. (For some reason, he likes to do everything in person. Skype isn't good enough for him.)

As we were talking, I brought up Archetypal Resonance.

I explained that thousands, even millions of people have a very similar story (to his own.)

And if we tell his story, just right, we'll reach people on the only level that matters...

The emotional level.

The lady sitting at the table next to us does one of those, "I'm sorry, I have to interrupt" kind of things.

She asks me, "Have you read The Hero and the Outlaw: Building Extraordinary Brands Through the Power of Archetypes?"

My response? "Nope. Never heard of it."

So with my client right there, I decide to quickly look it up on Amazon.

"Looks great" I said.

"I just had to say something. I've never heard anyone else talk about archetypes in marketing before." she summarized.

I actually ordered the book this morning. Looks really cool.

And even though I was kind of annoyed by the interruption - when I'm talking with a guy about a 5 figure copywriting gig, it did remind me of something.

With all of the gurus selling their surefire formulas and blueprints - trying to convince you there's "a right way to do things," I want you to remember this:

You already know more than you think you know.

What I mean is...

We all draw from the same creative stream that flows through everyone.

We might interpret the information differently, but it "comes to us" in the same way.

Some people call it Creative Inspiration. Others think The Universe planted the seed in their mind. Certain religious types believe they were divinely touched with God-like intelligence. Others still open a book, read the information and convince themselves that "learning" is the only way to... well... learn.

It's not. At least, it's not the ONLY way.

I'm the product of being self-taught.

I have a 4th grade education, on-paper, with only one tutor for three months since I was 9 years old.

I've figured out a lot of techniques, tricks, secrets, etc. for myself - just by writing, writing, writing...

...and thinking, thinking, thinking. (Not to mention observing people's behavior like a hawk.)

When I read books and see something I figured out years ago, but it's being touted as the next big thing, I smile.

Remember that scene in The Matrix where Morpheus and Neo are in the construct - where everything is white - awaiting programming?

I wrote almost that identical scene - for another story - when I was 11.

You know The Secret (Law of Attraction?)

I was talking (and applying) that kind of stuff (and way more) when I was 5 years old. But I call it The Law of Attention.

Do you ever use those Open Loops in your copy?

I started using those - before I even knew what they were called.

My point?

Just write. And stay open for Divine Inspiration.

You already know a lot that you haven't acknowledged you know.

How do you think the gurus figured out their little formulas?

It came to them during the process of trial and error.

Sure, read stuff. I've learned a lot just by hanging out 'round these parts.

But it is ALL just a rehashing of what's already known and been told by lots of people - who ALL learned it (or discovered the information) in different ways.

Mark

P.S. It's easy to get intimated in the copywriting game. There's a massive difference between a good copywriter... and a great one. When you read something from a good copywriter, you can definitely feel something. When you read stuff by a great copywriter, you feel like you just got punched in the face by Mike Tyson (during his prime.) It's not subtle. You're searching for the BUY NOW button - because you've just been exposed as a raw piece of flesh that needs fixing ASAP.

But if you want to become the great copywriter whose copy packs a major league punch, you've got to learn to trust you own instincts, FIRST. Then... when you integrate the stuff you learn, you'll be able to acknowledge how much you already know.

Don't know if you've come across this book:

Drawing on the Power of Resonance in Writing:...Drawing on the Power of Resonance in Writing:...

It's a quick read (seems like an expanded article) but you might get something out of it.

    Hey Mark,

    Awesome...

    I agree with your thinking.

For those of you who would LOVE to build your own copywriting business I have a few thoughts for you.

You do NOT have to be a copywriter who learns how to write copy from copywriting books, or from expensive copywriting training packages and pricey custom coaching...

IF you are savvy enough to really 'see copy' in your everyday world, like Mark does.

The people like you, Mark, who are 'naturally gifted' are very few and far between.

I am sure the thousands of copywriters who visit this forum will agree with me.

But I am also sure there are hundreds if not thousands of self-taught copywriters right on this forum making a decent living (or even better) writing for a living.

It can be done, you can become a successful writer IF you want to put in the effort.

    Here's what's real.

Some of us have a natural talent... for "telling a story" and making it come alive in text.

Some of us do not... and have to really struggle to put words on a page.

Some of us give up... before we ever get started as it all seems like too much work and too hard to master -- ensuring dismail failure.

    And then...

Some of us are so sure that "WE CAN MAKE IT IF WE GIVE IT ALL WE'VE GOT"... that WE DO!

    But it doesn't come easy.

    Nothing worth while ever does...

For many copywriters (and marketers) making a living writing it is a lifelong struggle... in order to write copy that sells well and makes them decent money.

But once you have 'THE TALENT'... to write sales copy easily and effortlessly that converts well enough to sell something...

Then -- the SKY is the LIMIT!

Nothing is really out of your reach... BUT ONLY IF YOU WANT IT BAD ENOUGH.

    That's the rub.

IF you want it BAD ENOUGH and IF you are willing to put in the extremely long hours of learn the craft and work hard to make your copywriting business dream come true.

    It all boils down to...

IF you are willing to sacrifice the time, put in the sweat equity with vast amounts of energy to study and learn how to write copy.

Then you STILL have to maintain the dogged persistence needed to 'work at your copywriting skills' so over time so you build your business income high enough ...only then you can quit your just-over-broke job.

But that's not the end of it either.

You have be consistent enough to maintain this high level of dedication to your new copywriting business over the long haul to ensure that income continues to roll in.

    The truth is...

Most don't have the right stuff.

Most would rather work a 9 to 5 job and quit at the end of the day.

    Most want their weekends free.

Most don't have the 'right stuff' to make it as a full time copywriter.

    Do YOU?

I sincerely hope all people who read this post and who want to build a copywriting business take the time to truly look inside themselves and see if they do 'have the right stuff' to make as a copywriter.

Most don't. But I hope you do.

But only time will tell, won't it?

    Challenge yourself to do it.

I will applaud you and your determination to 'never give up'...'never quit' and BECOME THE SUCCESSFUL COPYWRITER you always dreamed you'd be!

The income and dreams of freedom as a copywriter are fantastic, but only IF you apply yourself and have the rock-solid fortitude to actually do it.

Good luck to all in their business ventures in 2014!

      Hey Mark,

I remember an interview with Andre Agassi - during the mid-90's - when he was at one of his peaks on the ATP Tour.

He talked about how becoming the best is only half the battle, because there are always new people coming onto the scene that take the sport to the next level.

He created a visual that stuck with me - where he said getting to the top of the mountain is easier than fending off the people coming up behind you.

      In the copywriting world...

The digital age is pushing more and more people to learn the craft.

Top copywriters are being shown up by every day business owners.

      I think it's great.

Because it's pushing everyone to keep writing - more than ever.

      I agree with Jennie.

Writing copy is a lot of hard work. And it doesn't stop once you've got some top controls under your belt either.

      Here's how you know you're a copywriter:

Are your relationships strained, because all you can think about is the letter you're working on right now?

Is it difficult to restrain yourself from sitting down in front of the computer (or tablet) to write... and study other people's copy?

Do you realize you really don't have much of a life - beyond writing lots and lots of copy?

      "Yes?!?!"

Then you might just be a copywriter.

Enjoy your rise to the top of the mountain, because that's the easy part.

      And yes...

There are WAY more methods to becoming a copywriter who can spit out one top control after the other - if you STOP and acknowledge you already know more than you think you know.

On this, the beginning of 2014...

Give yourself a minute to take stock and acknowledge your accomplishments. Those accomplishments don't need to be top controls on CB. Those accomplishments might just be realizing that you get excited at the prospect of writing an effective, hook-embedded headline that sets the stage for a BIG story to be told.

Maybe you just learned how to write an effective blind offer.

Maybe you just figured out how to put together solo emails that get opened and motivate massive amounts of people to click thru.

Maybe you looked at some of your copy that's converting, but saw a few tweaks to your headline that increased conversions by 2%.

      The point is...

When you stop and acknowledge what you didn't know you know, like Daniel Larusso did when Mr. Miyagi asked him to demonstrate Paint the Fence... or Wax On, Wax Off, you can move forward with more confidence than ever.

      Anyway...

      I'm ranting.

Thanks Jennie for your contribution to the thread.

      You're spot on.

This business is a lot of work.

But when you can see 5 moves ahead, like in chess, because you're that damn good, it does get more exciting. Not easier per se. But definitely more exciting.

If you always put limit on everything you do, physical or anything else. It will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them.

sometime people know things but they are not confident enough on the source of information or they can't recall whole idea that's why we feel better to confirm and that's an good approach.
