Who is the AVERAGE IMer according to You?

As the title goes; who is the most typical, average internet marketer that hang around here or who is new to internet marketing, according to your own experience?

If you don't understand you customer, you won't know how to talk to them in such a way that both benefits you and them.

Through the power of "The wisdom of the crowds" we can together come up with the average and most typical internet marketer customer here on WF:

What is his/her her most common sex?

Who is his/her most common name?

What is his/her most common age?

What is his/her most common historical background? (what did he/she before starting with internet marketing?)

What is his/her most common fears with internet marketing? (what is he/she afraid of will happen by NOT doing internet marketing?)

What is his/her most common goals with internet marketing? (what does he/she want to GAIN by doing internet marketing?)

What is his/her most common challenges when he/she begins with internet marketing? (what is he/she struggling with most of the times when doing internet marketing?)

By asking yourself these questions and writing down the answers, you can come up with a kind of "Customer Profile" of the average internet marketer customer that you can "talk to" in all your squeeze pages, newsletters, salesletters and content in general.

So, who is the AVERAGE IMer according to You? ;-)

    Complete rubbish.

If you don't understand you (stet) customer, you won't know how to talk to them
That's true...but you're not looking to talk to Mr/Mrs Average - you're looking to segment and hone right in. Do you really think you can write copy that will resonate with both me and some schmuck that just got off the boat? Good luck with that.

(God almighty - why do I waste my time here?)

    Agreeing with Mal:

Your product or service is not for everyone.

    Niche down.

Listen to Simon Sinek here talking about TIVO. You'd think that would appeal to "everyone", but it was a flop.

There are always early adopters, the 15% or so who "just get it"...and then the rest of the bell curve that follows. Your easiest marketing will be to those early adopters. Then, once you have all those testimonials, you can start to go at the next, larger section of the bell curve--the early and late majorities.

Hello there again! Thank you very much for your replies.

    I believe you misunderstood me.

I was NOT talking about "trying to appeal to everyone".

I was instead trying to appeal to, for example, "Veronica, a 35 year old nurse, who is sick of this job, who wants to be able to make enough money in a different way (online) so she gets 20 more hours per week that she can spend more time with her children, husband and friends".

In other words, I was indeed, trying to appeal to a specific niche by adding all IMers up and find the common denominators and talking to that particular niche.

Indeed, IMers could be divided into newcomers, intermediate experienced ones, experts and so on. My niche in particular would be newcomers, who have very little or no knowledge whatsoever of the phenomenon "internet marketing" or its IM-abbreviation.

Am I making myself clearer now for a discussion/different response? :-)

What you're talking about is known as creating an avatar of your typical customer.

But if you're in a massive niche like IM then it becomes really difficult, as your potential customers are incredibly diverse. Even if you narrow it down to those who are newbies, it's still a huge market.

If you simply try too hard to appeal to your 'Veronica' then it means whatever you are saying will not resonate with the other 95% of your prospects.

But if you were trying to sell a product that helped new mothers shed the excess weight from their pregnancy (for example), then you can be a lot more specific when creating your customer avatar.

      Tim.
