Write like them, Speak like them --- Be like them.

When a child begins to learn a language, there are no grammar rules taught. All that happens is imitating correct use of the language.

This seems to be a very effective way of learning.

If you relocated to a new area, you will be surprised how your child will come to speak a foreign language so well --- faster than the parents.

Can one learn copywriting by handwriting, repeatedly, good copy?

May be using a swipe file of control sales letters.

This is just like a child repeating correct sentences from a parent.

Then ---

--- you can write like them; speak like them --- be like them!(top copywriters.)

Of course we do not advocate copying word for word but get effective money- making persuasive expressions.

What is your comment about this method of learning copywriting?

Couldn't agree more. I always take the approach that you mentioned when I write. While I try not to copy them word for word, I do change the word but keeping the style.

Now, how do one practice to be as good as the top copywriter?

When you look at copy written by the pros, the first thing you really notice, beside the structure of their piece, is how well they make use of 'idioms and 'colloquial sayings' throughout their copy, to helps evoke emotion in the copy and make it so much more reader friendly

Clayton Makepeace is a master at doing this, and it's a skill that can only be learned by 'doing it'.

      Until now

Aside from idioms and colloquial sayings, some of the best copy I've ever seen revolves around story telling. Become a good story teller and your copy becomes golden.

          You're absolutely right.....

I can write a 'story' and make it as boring as 'bat sh_t' - Or I can write a story that is engaging with a whole lot of empathy, all because of the words I use....and how I use those words

This style of learning has helped me hugely.

Unless you want to pay mega bucks for seminars etc, just reading and writing helps hugely - although I would love to go to a seminar some day. When your CTR and CR goes up then you know you are kicking ass and taking names!

Hmm. I have found that the practice of hand writing out a sales letter is helpful as far as learning the structure of a sales letter. The way I use to do this was read the sales copy several times (3 or more) and then write from memory.

Now on the subject of writing like Gary Halbert, John Caples, Gene Schwartz and other great copywriters. Why would you want to do that?
Write like Jomuli3. I like to write like me (wrcato2).
Just be yourself. Write like you. Don't try to imitate.
    All the best.
