Seeking feedback on my website renovations

Hi everyone,

I've just done a fairly massive overhaul of my website, and I am hoping to get some feedback from other copywriters. It's at About Nick Hilden | Nick HildenNick Hilden | Inspiration:Innovation:Realization.

Thanks!

You are definitely a very talented writer but your website looks as if its made with a standard wordpress template.

It was. Web design is not my forte.

I suggest using the valuable space on your home page to tell your web visitors exactly how they can benefit from reading further. If I want to hire you as a writer, I have no idea how you can help me. The backstory is important, but move it off the home page, or write it after you've addressed your site visitors' major questions. Don't make them think.

      Nick,

Are you trying to convert visitors into clients with this page? If so, it won't succeed.

      1. The picture. You're staring off into space and appear disinterested.

      2. The text. It's written at a 12th-grade level which is way too high.

      3. WIIFM. The reader has no motivation to read down to the testimonials, because in the first two paragraphs you only blather on about yourself.

You need to sell your services on your home page. Your "About Me" info. is a separate page on a service business website. Your copy on your "Services" page is much better copy for your home page.

But you should definitely have a "Services" page as well for your site.

You should consider two separate sites: one site to promote your copywriting and another site to deal with your interest in travel, adventure etc. When you combine these interests into one site, you send a confusing message to prospects...never a good thing.

You need to carefully review Dan Furman's book, Do the Web Write. He has great info. on how to write your services site.

    Best regards,
    Thomas O'Malley

You need to make your mind up whether you're a content writer or an advertising copywriter. If the latter - sell us. This site doesn't cut it. This is really hokey -
Before entering the world of professional writing, I gleaned experience from a variety of toils, working as a musician, school teacher, bartender, cook, venue promoter, street performer, and in a wide range of other disreputable capacities.
You can learn more about my background at myElance profile, or by requesting information viaemail.
Comments from my past clients attest to the unique and engaging quality of my work along with my outstanding level of professionalism:
Nobody cares about that stuff. They care about whether you can write them some words that will move their product. And this clumsy piece of writing can be taken two ways -
Nomadic by nature, my wanderings have taken me far and wide, and my work has varied accordingly.
You can't be all things to all people. If you want to be a copywriter...for God's sake man - write something that moves the reader to engage your services.

    Must try harder. C.

p.s. there's nothing wrong with using a Wordpress template. It's the words we're interested in - not so much the design. Check this out - http://www.mturkjob.com/Statisticall...lesletter.html

p.p.s. looking at your portfolio I see you're a content writer NOT a copywriter. It aint the same thing man. Nothing to stop you becoming a copywriter but webpage copy isn't advertising copy. Its content. Completely different animal.

      What does your buyer seek?

That should be the only question in your head when you are writing a sales letter. Then all you need to do is find the best presentation to lure him in and keep him reading all the way while you push his buttons.

      Yeah, listen to Mal.

      Content =/= Copy - it's a completely different animal.

Copy is somewhat of a predictive cold-calling text. It's a salesman hidden inside a letter, pre-empting and mind-reading the prospect and its only aim is to sell - not inform.

I think you'll struggle finding work using this website as your calling card. And if you do happen to find work, you won't be paid what you're worth.

    Why?

Because as a writer, you've positioned yourself as a jack-of-all-trades. I think that's a HUGE mistake and it will cost you clients and business.

Businesses, marketers, entrepreneurs want writers with deep experience in their specific subject matter. When I say specific, I mean ULTRA-SPECIFIC. Not only that, they want to know without question you know how to write in a way that compels their market to read/watch and then take action.

Look at other professions. Doctors, lawyers, accountants, etc.

Specialists always make more money. The more you focus, the more money you'll make.

I know it's counter-intuitive, but that's what works. Pick your subject matter, pick a market and then focus.

    - Rick Duris

PS: I realize this advice may go against the grain. Feel free to ignore.

You're not the first starving writer. Won't be the last.

You say one of your areas of expertise is branding.

I don't see any evidence of that in how you've positioned (or should say, haven't positioned) your own business.

The one thing that I know about you from reading your content is...

You're an intellectual. You're smart. And you want people to think you're smart.

But you'll never be a copywriter (or even a good content writer) - until you get out of your own head.

Here's a branding idea for you to munch on...

Call yourself The Cerebral Copy Assassin. "I'll murder your copy - by getting so deep inside of your prospect's minds that they won't know what hit 'em. They'll press that Buy Now Button so fast - just hoping it'll save their lives from the twisted truth I scare them into seeing. But don't worry, you've got the goods to save them from the torture I induce... right? You better. Or I'm coming for ya."

    My point is...

Play off your intelligence and create some branding around it. That'll help you lighten up and actually connect with potential clients in a way that pays your bills.

As your website stands right now...

    There is ZERO salesmanship.

Thanks for the input everyone. My site has been pretty effective in terms of getting clients, but there have been some great suggestions here on how I can make it even better.

It sounds like you didn't even really want feedback.

The website is simple and good. I like it, but maybe change the text color in the header, "When You Need a Words" is a bit hard to read, black color in dark background.
