Copy fitting of a 4th grader?

There's a pretty cool free tool that tests the readability of your copy.

Like golf, lower scores are better (to a point).

Most writers who were/are aspiring authors turned copywriters - I call them Starbucks copywriters - write copy that tries to be clever using big words and complicated metaphors etc.

While copywriters who truly understand salesmanship know that you have to write your copy to the lowest common denominator. Clarity trumps flowery language.

You can paste your copy into this tool and it will spit out a grade level. It will highlight areas that you might want to work on.

I am told that the Flesch Kincaid Grade level that the tool spits out should be between 4-9 for your copy to be easily understood by your readers.

Here's the tool:

PS - this post scores 8.65.

PPS - just noticed someone else posted a similar (better?) tool. Guess it's like the 10,000 monkeys thing...

You can also do this in MS Word by enabling a setting in spell check.
