A funny thing happened on the way to the forum ...

So earlier this afternoon, I was thinking about a post I wanted to make in Max5ty's thread: http://www.warriorforum.com/copywrit...ng-career.html

Basically, I'd like some advice or guidance on what I should do for my first copywriting project.

I really have no interest in becoming a freelance copywriter for a large publishing company.

Nor do I really have any desire to go hunting for clients and writing sales letters to build their businesses - at least I don't want to do this long term or have this as the core of my business.

What I would like to do is create and sell products of my own, or find products to sell.

But I have many concerns, questions, opportunities and ideas for how to proceed.

While I was working on how to present these thoughts in a post, a funny thing happened.

I got a phone call from a good friend and great guy, who also happens to be my insurance agent and master networker.

He tells me that a guy he knows - "one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet" - is having a problem with his website and would I please give him a call?

Well, I don't do websites, but I might know someone who can help, so if my insurance agent buddy asks me to make a call, I'm happy to.

So I call Peter (who is a really nice guy). And Peter is a furrier and sales are way down.

The company he's partner in was started in 1964 and at one time had 16 retail stores. Then in 2003, they started making and selling clothes for MSNBC, and I believe they moved the entire business in that direction.

Now they've been out of MSNBC for a couple years and are selling their items on their website - mostly to the followers they've gained over the years at MSNBC.

They currently have a pop-up store in Phoenix, AZ, but they're closing it in March. I didn't ask questions about this.

I did ask some other questions, but I kept it very brief.

They don't do email marketing.
They don't do print advertising.
They don't do direct mail campaigns.

In Peter's words, "We don't do any marketing, but I know we should."

His website is managed by a company in India, and he believes technical issues might be the reason so many visitors reach the checkout page but don't checkout. He wants to have someone local manage and maybe redesign the website. This is why he wanted to speak with me.

I asked Peter, "Are you looking to fix your website, or are you looking to sell your $600,000 of inventory?"

He said he's looking to make more sales.

I told him I was pressed for time, but would like to review his website and meet with him next week when I'll ask some deeper and more specific questions to see if and how I can best help him. We're meeting next Wed. at 1pm at his office here in NY.

So, I was originally planing on stopping by Warrior Forum tonight to ask for ideas for what I should do for my first project, but it looks like my first potential project has fallen into my lap.

I'm going to sleep on this one tonight and swing back here tomorrow with some questions.

If I didn't have this forum, I would never have had the confidence to tell Peter I believe I might be able to help.

But I do have the confidence I can help him, because I know I have this place and you guys to help me.

Thanks,
-Rob
