What to say when you didn't contact your subscribers for a long time?

Hi guys...

Here's the point: I have a niche list of a couple of thousands members... and I didn't contact them for about three months now.. have you an idea how to deal with this kind of situation?
(though I had a good relashionship with them already.)

If you can help with good/appropriate words or phrases to use that would be great!

Thanks,
David

Hi ____. Sorry I've been out of touch so long.

Let me tell you what happened...

    Paragraph describing your circumstances.

PHEW! I'm glad that's over with...

Anyway, here's why I'm writing today...

I've got some great stuff to share with you over
    the next couple of weeks.

So, please keep an eye out for my next message
    which will contain ________________!

Thanks for being such a loyal subscriber.

    All my best,

    You

  • Brian, that is perfect That is exactly what you want to do - be honest with your subscribers, explain why you were gone for so long, and tell them that you're happy to be emailing them again. Don't sell them anything - just offer some good quality content for awhile (the kind of thing that they're used to from you) and go from there. You will probably get some unsubscribes, but most people will be understanding and happy to have you back if you're just honest with them.

    David, Brian,

Do you use your own SMTP server for mailings or a special third-party service?

I use Aweber for list building and email marketing.

But some of my customer stuff comes from my own servers (from within scripts, for example).

    Nice Brian.

    I'd add only this...

Apologize, like brian said... when you tell your story for your "reason why" don't put it off on anyone or anything. Take the mea culpa. Your list wants to see you as human. Admit it was you who should have contacted them no matter what... and that you dropped the ball.

Then I'd give them an immediate bribe. Give em something to download right away. Something valuable as a "Sorry I screwed Up" gift.

      Yeah, what he said.

I was thinking the exact same thing, and it's gotta be a real, genuine, valuable gift as well, not just some crap ebook thats been on your hard drive for 3 years.

I know a guy is selling a chirpopractic reactivation letter on ebay.com.au (i hope he still is) which would make a great swipe for this.

On the plus side it's only 3 months, so the damage might not be all that bad. The rule of thumb is that your list cools off by 10% every month you don't contact them, so you may not lose too many, especially if you give them a great gift.

    Yeah,

I second what Brian and Vin said. I think it's important you give some sort of amazing gift away too, because unless your emails before were dynamite, your list probably won't have even noticed you stopped contacting them.

So show the value of reading your e-mails in a big way.

I would also take this opportunity to turn over a new leaf because 3 months is potentially a lot of money and time you've wasted... Tut, tut. You shouldn't let that happen again.

Commit to contacting your list every day from now on, and commit to giving away jam packed free content each time you do.

In fact when you e-mail your list, tell them you are going to do just that, put it out in the open so you know you'll be letting folks down should you go A.W.O.L. again.

    Tell 'em the truth.

    Whatever it is.

    And apologize.

And offer them something of value.

Tell 'em you're back to stay.

    Tell 'em you missed 'em.

Tell 'em you're back because you're running low on coin.

Exactly - I've hadd the same problem working on a project that took me away from my list. I just said what had happened, pointed them to the project website that explained what it wsa - and what the excitement was - and took up again. It seemed to work ok... I think people like to know that others have a life!
