Sales letter to sell the Gary Halbert Letter?

Did Gary Halbert use a direct mail sales letter to sell The Gary Halbert Letter back in the day, similar to how sales letters are used to sell investment newsletters, or did it grow organically by word of mouth? Any insight or known swipes is appreciated.

Why not ask his son Bond. He's a member here.

You should definitely check his sales letter collection - the motherlode, or others. Or ask his sons.

He ran advertisements in newspapers to sell his newsletter.

He was also running lead generation ads, where he gives you free reports or something, and follows you up.

And I don't know about word of mouth, but here's what I found in Drayton Bird's book. It's a gift subscription. Gary probably asked his existent subscribers to give him the names and addresses of people they thought would be interested to receive a gift subscription (My opinion). Then he sent them a letter like this.

Here, I will type it out.

    *Dollar Bill Attached Here*

    Dear MR. Hobday,

As you can see, I have attached a nice crisp $1.00 bill to
the top of this letter. Why have I done this? Actually, there
    are two reasons:

    1. I have something very important to tell you and I
needed some way to make sure this letter would catch
    your attention.

    2. And secondly, since the message in this letter can
quickly double or even triple your income, I thought
using a dollar bill as an "eyecatcher" was
    especially appropriate.

Here's why I am writing: Appartently, you've got a friend out
there who respects you and...respects you a lot. How do I know
this? That's easy. You see, your friend Peter Allen gifted you
with a six-month trial subscription to my newsletter which is
cleverly named... The Gary Halbert Letter.

What's the big deal about you getting a gift subscription to
my newsletter? Well, for one thing, I never discount my
newsletter (it's $195.00 per year) and I never send out sample
issues. For another, my newsletter has probably helped more
people become multi-millionaires than any other publication on
earth. Every time you receive one of my letters, it will be like
getting your hands on a secret weapon. You're going to get so
much inside info on new ways to make money, it will probably make
you dizzy. Here's a small sample of just a few of the inside
    secrets revealed in my newsletter:

    Joe,

He used a sales letter... I'm looking at one of them right now that looks like it ran in magazines... it has that "special report/insert" look that makes it look like it ran in either mags or newspapers.

If you want, PM me your email addy and I'll send it over!

    Shawn
