People often post here to ask about the AWAI copywriting training. I don't know the program, but here is a glimpse of one of the assignments. A student posted their work and the evaluation:

"The Beautification Of Saint Mom"

Might help some folks.

    That's...that's really something...

Seriously, though, thanks Joe--confirmed to me that there's probably no reason to take it outside of access to AWAI's job board, which likely isn't worth the course price tag. Appreciate it!

Like something a high school student might write.

I read on past that whack headline thinking there was going to be some clever pun on beautification/beatification but no - just dud grammar in a dud letter.

And this little (guffaw) gem -
the headline with the 4 U's (useful, urgent, unique, ultra-specific) in mind.

You watch. AWAI is gonna ask that guy to take that post down. It does them no favors.

    Yep. That kind of wow.

    I didn't have words.

To pay someone to critique you and then argue with their advice? Just self sabotage, pure and simple.

well thats the very first asignment in the course, as I have the course. like they ask you to write out a few letters by hand, then ask you to write a letter about a restaurant.

Here's some interesting info in the AWAI course: Michael Masterson/AWAI Copywriting Course Scam

Just to be fair, I haven't taken the course, but there seems to be some strong opinions about it.

  • Okay... I really haven't engaged in a couple years, but man o man AWAI seems to have really gotten bad. I took the course... my first mentee Kevin Rogers took the course... and yeah, we both quit.

But back when I did it the critiques were way stiffer. This was truly crap and the reviewer seemed to pat him on the back with a "much better." Better than WHAT? I imagine.

My favorite "crap" is how the writer took a steak... one of a menu's true A-listers and used a simile that compared it to another food. A piece of bread for crying outloud.

Rule number 1: You never sell a steak by comparing it to a dinner roll. But... if you're selling a dinner roll and can somehow compare it to a steak... have at it!

Also... what happened to the scoring? AWAI used to score the student's copy. Did this writer leave the score out or... did they drop that practice?

Patting myself on the back for being just the second student to ever get a perfect score... and with no rewrites. And I'm sure if I looked back my copy was laughable... just not even close to this example.
