Moonlighting - any thoughts?

Hey all:

I work for a financial publisher as a copywriter, but I'd like to moonlight to do some copywriting work (in a different field, of course).

Any ideas how I can promote myself on WF or elsewhere without having to give my name out right away? Or is this a fool's errand?

Thanks!

I moonlight in related industries. I don't think giving your name out should be your biggest concern unless you've signed an agreement that says you will work for NO ONE ELSE while you're employed with this company.

Usually it's an agreement that you won't work for a competitor, if there's one at all.

And the best way to generate biz is to figure out WHO you want to write for and go after them. There's plenty of methods depending on what you're most comfortable with. You can try your own direct mail, email, cold calling, getting an intro in person or via LinkedIn, or doing something really creative and out there.

I love the dude who wanted a job in marketing who sent his resume on a 4-pack of home-brewed beer. He called it Resum-Ale. You bet your ass they hired that guy.

Yeah, if you work for Agora, Elevation Group, Stansberry... etc... you shouldn't have any problem doing outside work.

If something feels like a conflict of interest, don't do it.

Out of curiosity, why is it important to hide your identity?

    Hi SW,

I'm a full time copywriter/web marketer too and have certainly had my share of struggles, when it comes to getting moonlighting work.

However, these days my biggest challenge hasn't been finding the work. More often than not it's been finding the time to finish it. The good news is that I've finally gotten to the point of where I've learned to price my work in a way that doesn't get me slammed.

For me the key to getting moonlighting work, in the beginning, was networking with other copywriters as well as agencies. If you do this enough every now and then, you'll find your self at the right place; at the right time - this often means happening upon a copywriter who is too busy to fulfill demand.

The only downside to doing it this way is that it will be difficult to conceal your identity. However, the upside is that you can probably command higher fees offline.

      Thanks, benbro - good point.

I'm wondering if I should do a 'Warriors For Hire' for copywriters here who have overflow work and could use a second pair of hands at a discount rate. That way, I could build up my contacts/network without having to work for free/low pay in order to get myself established.

Probably not a bad idea. It could certainly let you feed two birds with one stone - remain somewhat anonymous and still moonlight... I haven't ever tried it here but now that I think about it I have done something similar on DP.
