Learning copywriting in college

Hi all,

I am a college student who is doing a marketing degree and I was wondering I have a unit called copywriting and creative execution, I am wondering what I can actually get into with copywriting as I heard you can be VERY profitable with it,

I was thinking of using this knowledge and using it with affiliate marketing for making sales pages, heard you can make some decent earnings of commissions through that.

What do you guys think?

Go ahead and take the class as it will be useful toward your chosen degree.

However, I'll tell you this...25 years ago I was a college student going for a marketing degree, and I took a copywriting class. And it taught me the basics (benefits over features, lead big, etc).

But when I went into business for myself, I found that what I learned in college was vastly inferior to what I had learned in the marketplace. The market moves a lot faster these days, so I imagine the gap is even wider.

Take the class, get your degree. But expect to do your real learning on the job.

I agree with you. We learned a lot in real life.

I've seen the text books for many of these classes. My take is, it would be like learning MMA fighting from a book.

skriker, if it's a class you can take and it will count towards your degree (meaning you're not paying extra for it as it's already part of your curriculum) and it'll teach you some basics, go for it. but one class will not make you a copywriter.

if you're really interested in the field you're better of reading a couple of decent books on it, spending some time on wf reading the sticky on resources for new copywriters, writing out classic sales letters by hand, and then practicing writing copy for everything you encounter (find bad ads and rewrite them, write ads for stuff you're selling on eBay, find bad sales letters and improve them), etc.

you had mentioned you want to do some affiliate marketing, and you'll probably learn more about copy and business in general just doing some of that, than you will in a college copywriting course.

however, start by talking to the professor who does the course and see if they are a copywriter. maybe they have an impressive background and you can learn from them. (probability is low because they would probably be out earning money as a copywriter, or offering an online course for big money rather than teach a college course about it - but you never know until you talk to them.)

      good luck!

After you take the copywriting class, then go sell ads for the college newspaper or spots on the college radio station.

That's what I did and it gives you real world experience real fast.
