Educational materials for someone not wanting to become a professional copywriter?

I would like to learn about copywriting to improve my store's product descriptions. What would be some good courses, audiobooks, or lectures for someone like me who's not wanting to become a paid copywriter? I'm hoping to find something in audio or video format rather than a book, but if there's something that I absolutely must read go ahead and list it.

    What's wrong with books??

    You absolutely must READ:

Tested Advertising Methods by John Caples
The Ultimate Sales Letter by Dan Kennedy
    Outrageous Advertising by Bill Glazer

Check out copywriting videos on Youtube by Dan Kennedy and Craig Garber.

    Also, check out Doberman Dan.

The list could go on and on.

I read slowly and get distracted easily by my toddler, so audio is much easier for me to get through. I've been doing some research on the best copywriting teachers and read that while Dan Kennedy is great at what he does, online style copywriting is not his strong point. Would he be a good option for someone wanting to write internet product descriptions?

Copywriting is salesmanship in print... whether offline or online.

Since you're writing about product descriptions, sign up to get catalogs for everyone you can. What on Earth, Harriet Carter, etc.

Marcia and David said it before I could.

Study catalog copywriting, and look at sites with product descriptions you like.

Thanks guys, I started reading other companies product descriptions last night and I think thats a good start. And marciayudkin thanks for that recommendation. I actually used your guide on business naming a while back and it was fantastic, so I'm sure your copywriting book will be great too!

  • This is probably not the place to say it.

And I am not an affiliate.

And (actually) I don't have Marcia's "Catalogue Writing" stuff.

So Steve, what pearl of wisdom are you about to impart?

Well I have got several of Mrs Yudkins other copywriting treasures.

And they are all blindingly* good.

Anything Hershel Gordon Lewis writes concerning catalog copy is worth reading.

How to Write Powerful Catalog Copy: Herschell...How to Write Powerful Catalog Copy: Herschell...

Google him. His insights are extremely useful.

Like when to use $19.00 v. $19 v. nineteen dollars.

  • Do what Rick said…

    But be a touch careful.

That old rascal HGL used to produce R rated movies.

You could tell by the bouncing ladies...

I only found this out by accident.

Thinking "Wow, so that's what good copywriting looks like…"

  • Luckily I missed the gore - I was too busy watching the 4 ladies playing nude volleyball.

Wish I could remember the "headline."
