Printed Direct Mail Sales Letter or Postcard?

Hello everyone,

Thank you in advance for your input on this thread, I really appreciate it.

Anyway, what's better for a direct mail piece? Would it be better to send a printed long form sales letter or a postcard directing the prospect to a digital sales letter or even a squeeze page?

I am currently speaking about it with a friend and personally I think the postcard would be more effective in building a relationship. The way I see it he can then capture email addresses and follow up with everyone who opts in.

Plus it will save a hell of a lot of money in print and postage costs.

Thanks

  • I agree Postcards do wonders at directing people to an interweb page

Far cheaper than a 29 page printed epic, it's solus advertising which is not clammering for attention with a clutter of other Ads and its almost impossible to fling in the bin without reading it.

You need the copy to be fascinating and intriguing.

Using tried and tested persuasion techniques that tell people they'll discover…

Something few people know or something they aren't supposed to know (a big secret).

    Or

Something that really will bring them a huge (emotional) benefit.

Do this well and and they'll be aching to look at your site with hundreds of fingers desperately typing in your url.

Just my .02, but I very rarely even open an envelope if I think it contains a sales letter (though I'm speaking as a consumer, not sure who your audience is.) Direct mail is the way to go but, as Steve suggested, you need to have compelling copy/visual. It doesn't require someone to open an envelope and your message will at least be glanced at and hopefully read.

    Hi Easy,

What type of business is the direct mail for??

Postcards and sales letters can both work, you just need the right list and to test. Send postcards to half of your list and send sales letters to the other half and note your results.

Wrong. If you do it correctly the print and postage will cost you nothing.

A long form sales letter allows you to interact with your prospect. If you write it correctly you will be answering all your prospects objections.

Weaving in the benefit and features and will persuade them (done correctly) that they would be foolish not to take you up on what you are selling. (Assuming it's not complete crap)

Risk reversal and actually making them feel bad if they don't take you up on your offer. This takes years to perfect. Some can do it. Some can't. I've done both and the sales letter in my experience has destroyed the postcard.

Depends on what your skill level is on how to persuade and compel a prospect to do what you want so both party's benefit.

    Hello everyone,

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts about the postcard vs letter debate.

I can see that there are a number of reasons that both can work well and I really am thankful that between you... You have given me much more to think about.

As for the product it is a football/soccer gambling video product which I will be keeping confidential for the time being.

The list we would be mailing to would be targeted to people living in the UK who are actively seeking football related products and will be purchased from a reputable list broker.

AmericanMuscle, I like your idea of split testing 50% letters vs 50% postcards. I will be speaking to my partner about it.

Thanks again for the advice guys, it really is appreciated.

    Regards,

    Ste
