I want to make it BIG on Amazon FBA "Newbie ALERT"

Hi There!
I am fairly new to this forum (First post actually). I know what you are thinking, jeez another newbie. Well you are right and wrong.
Long story short, I used to sell around 20 items a month on eBay (Enough to make a few hundreds a month). Nothing too fancy, I have a full time job and intend to keep it. My problem with eBay was that I couldn't scale it. I used to shop garage sales and list online, pack and ship.
I read a little about Amazon FBA and I am sold on the idea. However a simple search got me lost. There is a ton of stuff out there (Courses, Books, etc...), and I have no idea what's good and what's not!

Here is a list of questions for the community:
- Can you please tell me how you got started?
- What did you use for training and other resources?
- I have a bunch of new products (gloves) with no UPC (new with tags but no bar-code), how do I sell these on Amazon?
- Where do you source your products?

Thanks,
Playertee!

In such a situation what I tell my students is buy your own UPC codes. They are cheap and you can use them over and over again. Even if you run out of the products you can transfer the UPC code to another product. Before you do that though, check if the same [product is not already listed on Amazon. If the product is already listed by another seller you dont need UPC code for it. You can simply add the product to the existing list.

Great advice, will do. Is it necessary to have a gs1 from the manufacturer? I can't get a hold of him unfortunately

I suggest checking out the 2 ScanPower books. Online Arbitrage is about $200.00 - but very much worth it.

You can buy UPC's, and assign them to your inventory. You can then create a listing on Amazon and an ASIN will be assigned to it.

I buy from Manufacturers, Distributors, etc.

This would make more sense if I am dealing with manufacturers or unlimited supply. Right?
So if I have a one of a kind item with no UPC, ebay should make more sense?

I read the older version, how different is this one from the previous one?

200$ is kinda steep for a beginner, don't you think?
What is the difference between this book vs the older version? Anyone knows?

I'm in my second full month of FBA and I'm killing it! I've had nearly 200 orders since I've started, and they keep pouring in.

I'm ashamed to admit that FBA is the ONLY online thing I've ever started that has actually made me real money almost immediately. (When I first set up my account on Seller Central, I just added a book I had laying on my desk to see how the process worked. I thought something had gone wrong till I realized the book had SOLD in literally 5 minutes of created my account lol).

Here are some tips from me.. READ READ READ.

You do NOT need to buy some expensive "system" to get going. In fact, don't. Save that $$ to cover your Amazon Pro Seller fees ($39,99 a month).. I suggest you read "Amazon Autopilot" by Peter Valley. I found this book to be MUCH better than "Arbitrage" by Chris Green, which was basically a 250 page ad for his Scanpower services with a few general tips mixed in.

No offense meant to Chris Green or Scanpower, the app is great for book scouting and they have some cool tools, but once you get the hang of it, you won't need any of those paid tools.

        More tips:

*Start with books. They are super easy to source and deal with. You can ship a 40lb box of books to AZN for cheap too.

*Understand what Sales Rank really means.

*Be paranoid, and follow AZN rules - If you get banned you're done selling there forever.

        *Bundle, Bundle, Bundle!!

*Sign up for Pro Seller right out of the gate. It'll save you from paying AZN an extra $1 for every FBA sale.

*NEVER USE STICKER-LESS / CO-MINGLED - You are just asking for heartbreak and potential nightmares.

I could go on and on with more tips, but that's all I have time for right this sec.

        Good luck!!

Great inspiration. Are you just selling books or what other merchandize are you selling? Do you source products from wholesale sources?

I used to do a lot of selling on eBay and Amazon. Now I just focus on my makeup site and my Dubli affiliate account. Best source I found for sourcing is the power sellers union. Like $60 to join, no monthly and hundreds of wholesale listings.

Excellent comments above, yes Chris Green's book was too much of an advertisement for me.

As for these two questions -

Great response upnya! When you talk about bundling are you talking about books? And do you think the book you recommended, "Amazon Autopilot" would be useful for a company selling non-media? The book's description seems to focus on that.

          Thanks

If you want to do amazing with Amazon FBA, you need the right education.

Send me a PM, I will point you in the right direction. Just to let you know, I can rank item's on the first page on Amazon for competitive keywords. Now, I don't get there instantly, takes me about 3-4 weeks.

It's very simple, Amazon work on a 30% gross profit margin basis and ~0% net profit. Any marketplace you have to pay up to 15% fees, the FBA is the same as something like ShipWire. Amazon work at 1,100% efficiency per employee, small business are lucky if they achieve 100-200% - so they have volume, margin, and low cost base on their side.

So how do you make it big, you need to build the business up through the levels over normally 7-10yrs. We bypass all that but you need to understand 95%+ of how the entire revenue chain works - most will be specialists in 1-2% - such as hosting, seo, pricing etc.

Let's say you spend 50hrs playing with hosting an ecommerce site, hosting is 1% of revenue, so to have a viable business you will need 5,000hrs of effort! The FBA is a small part of the whole picture including building it in to the pricing - if you spend 10s or 100s of hours on it - then it's going to be a very long journey. There's a reason 95% of business startups fail - this is it!

Guys I need advice regarding purchasing UPCs. Do I have to be the manufacturer? And do I have to know the manufacturer's gs code? Or can I just go buy a random UPC code for the product I have and want to sell?
Other question, let's say I have multiple versions of the same product, can I use the same UPC? For example, I have a 100 University logo gloves (different universities). Do I need to get a separate UPC for each University glove?
    Thanks alot

      Hello!

If your product already comes with a UPC on it, first make sure it's not already in the amazon catalog. If it is, you'll have to list it by that. Here's the other answers:

      1. You do not have to be the manufacturer or know the gs code.
      2. Yes, you can just buy random UPC's
3.You can do product variants, but I'm almost 100% sure they would each require a unique UPC.

Here's where I get my UPC's, I'm not sure if its the cheapest place, but I've had good luck with them.

    hai,

I'm also new to FBA. just preparing for my first order. anyway this is what i've done

    1) find suitable product that i can make as a private label. there are few criteria that you need to observe. ie price range (mainly $10-$50) and product ranking (not too low and not too high)
    2) find the right manufacturer. mainly from alibaba
    3) order your first sample product. this is to gauge the product quality as well for the ads photos
    4) gain some knowledge on importing product from oversea
    5) gain more experience in seller central (amazon) menu and options. including the upc and fnsku. we dont really need expensive upc
    6) start selling. there are few important part in this. but i'm still learning though.

hope this can give you some guide.

i do plan to blog about my experience in this. i can fix a date or time for this. writing is not really my skill he...

anyway do pm me if you need further details. i dont come to wf as i used too. i'm getting old i guess.

It is good to see helpful posts outlining how people are running their business.

There are a couple of things I would like to comment on.

As one who teaches safe sourcing I would suggest you avoid using Alibaba. There are plenty of reasons, but maybe just to say that their verification system is a joke would be enough.

The other things is that Bujuk says "4) gain some knowledge on importing product from oversea". If anyone wants some help in that regard, they might like to check out my thread Ask Me Anything About Product Sourcing And Importing For Profit. ― Veteran Importer Here.

I think China can be a good place for sourcing your product in terms of quality, variety and cost-effectiveness but a thorough research for various manufacturers is must.

I have taught hundreds of people how to safely source products for China and other countries. Finding genuine manufacturers is essential if you want to make big profits.

That is very difficult to do if you rely on the most frequently recommended site Alibaba. There you will find thousands of suppliers falsely claiming to to be manufacturers.

There are safe sites where you can be sure that you have found real manufacturers. I don't publish them online because there is a lot more to safe sourcing than just using safe sites, See my thread: If your secret B2B portals are so safe why don't you share? You will find helpful information there.

I have been using http://officialupccodes.com for a very long time for Amazon, ebay, rakuten and sears and I haven't had any problems and fast service. if you plan on using FBA â€" Fulfillment by Amazon, you will be required to have your UPC code on affixed to your products. When creating an Amazon listing you will be required to enter the UPC code for your product, simply enter the 12 digit UPC code number that you decided to assign to that product and you are all set!
