It really depends on what you're going to sell. If it's products that are against Paypal's TOS, then a merchant account will be necessary and they also have TOS, so without knowing, hard to say. I use Paypal but have used merchant accounts for products that Paypal doesn't like.

I don't know. Never paid much attention. Most of my customers pay via Paypal rather than a credit card.

        Thanks for the info.
Does PayPal pro take only a monthly fee of $30 or does it additionally take some % from each transaction?

I Personally recommend 2checkout, or you can use 3d-cart if you would like to have your own credit card system.

It always depends on what you're going to sell, anyway I usually accept Paypal and in some cases even bitcoin, you can get some more visibility by accepting it.

I also vouch for 2co. Some of your customers may not have pp account and with 2co, they can use credit card.

Paypal Payment Pro is always a good way to go to accept Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal. You get volume discounts the larger monthly sales volume.

    Your monthly sales**

    Your fee per transaction

    $0 to $3,000
    2.9% + $0.30

    $3,000.01+ to $12,000
    2.5% + $0.30*

    $12,000.01+ to $125,000
    2.2% + $0.30*

    $125,000.01 +
    1.9% + $0.30*

If you are from the USA you might be able to find a slightly cheaper credit card processor getting a 1.9% rate at a lower volume.

I use paypal payments pro with gateway on my site. This way people can pay via paypal, but also with credit card. If they pay with credit card, they do not know they are using paypal

      My personal choice is 2checkout.

      Advantages:
      - accepts all major cards + PayPal
      - low fees
      - accept international sellers
      - withdraws to Payoner account (it's the best feature for international sellers)
      - very friendly support team
      - well-documented API (for web developers)
