Hello guys,

I'm looking for some ideas that will allow me to set me aside from a couple of websites that are currently dominating the market.

Aside from the products they offer their websites are pretty cold ecommerce sites.
How would you give a twist and inject a little be of personality, or something, to grab traffic attention?

To find out my competitors just google for "trophy and awards", first 2-3 paid ads are the biggest players in town.

Any ideas would be fantastic to hear.

Thanks

Are you talking on-site web design ideas or off-site marketing/branding ideas?

On site. These are items are shipped country wide. I was thinking about a video with sport athletes and winning moments, something like that...

You can certainly have a more modern looking website, the few top ranking sites I looked at just now look pretty dated. I'd start there.

A feature video is a good idea. Another thing I'd consider is 360 degree rotating product images. For product types like this it looks amazing, and I don't know the data on it, but I guarantee it boosts the conversion rate a lot in markets like this! It would be a significant investment, but look at how awesome it looks: http://www.lionsorbet.com/pages/jewellery-animation-video

I also think you could go with a memorable & "fun" mascot. That would add some character that none of the top ranking sites appear to have at this point!

      Thank you Dave,
The mascot idea is great, like hostgator i.e.
The rotating images are cool but I am dealing with a huge catalog and I would never be able to accomplish such a huge tasks.
I agree that these websites look old.
      Thanks

That depends on the business approach you want to take. On one side you have time based niche sites and the other large corporate technology based. Do you want to make £1m with one employee or £1mil with 10 employees, it's a very different approach. Do you want to do it internationally or just one country, then you have the actual product which in effect is niche so what do the largest sites turnover in visitors and revenue.

You can compete on any level in between, but that comes down to how much resource you have an how much revenue you want to generate. The higher the per resource revenue the 'colder' the whole business becomes. It sounds like you want to take the niche marketing route and for that you are going to need some good graphic designers, some experienced marketing, and an eCommerce solution that is business orientated not technical.
