Woocomerce is great! You can build a complete shop with their plugin. And if you need even more functions, you can get an add-on for nearly everything.
    +1 for woocommerce!

Do I have to use one of their themes or can I use any wordpress theme with their plugins?

No, you can use any WooCommerce compatible theme, ThemeForest usually have the best selection. WooCommerce is a business friendly platform, it means to grow you need to put in your time via marketing and blogging. Magento is the opposite as it can be automated but isn't business friendly unless you know people who can flatten that out for you.

WooCommerce is considered the most popular WordPress e-commerce plugin. And it is readily available for free. Loaded filled with features, completely built-into your self-hosted WP website.

Thanks for that... So you can run an ok shop/store from just using the free option at woocommerce without having any of those paid plugins... But if you want to enhance the store experience then use the paid plugins. no worries
