Should i try competing against Amazon on Amazon.com??

Hi,
I'm currently researching new niches to enter and new products to sell. I specifically want to sell these items on Amazon.com I've found some items that aren't patented that I'd consider having made overseas (with some slight tweaks) and then putting those items for sale on Amazon.com.

My big question is should I stay out of niches in which Amazon.com sells products?

And in addition to that, should I not consider selling a product if Amazon.com sells something very similar?

I'm trying to gauge whether to avoid selling in a niche in which Amazon.com actively sells items. Or avoiding types of products that Amazon.com currently sells (on Amazon!).

thanks all,
Lisa

Shouldn't be an issue at all, if you can compete on price and quality and it is a generic product and no copyright or patent issues (MAKE SURE), then I don't see why there is a concern. But, you need to determine if there is enough demand in this product/niche, and people are still buying from other competitors selling similar products too. You don't want to enter a niche, whereby although there are several sellers selling similar products, amazon get more than 80% of the market share, then you are left with 20% market share to fight with the other sellers.

    Research is the key!

Well, you need to play a mind game. Just promote your business on Google or social media sites. But, before thinking about it, first make sure that whatever you are selling, is a quality product. After that you can go with different marketing strategies.

      Hi Lisa,

Sooner or later, if you find a high demand product, there is a big chance that Amazon will compete with you! They have done it to a large number of sellers.

Yes I have heard that if Amazon sees a product selling rel well they will than jump in and become a seller for that product as well. Do not let that stop you from your plan. If you can compete with price and maintain a steady inventory you should do well.

I don't think there is a problem with selling similar products as Amazon, on Amazon. You're not the first one to do it and you definitely won't be the last person to try this out
However, if you think Amazon is too much of a competitor, why not set up your own online shop, on your own website?

The only problem with that idea is that your own site will never gat as much traffic as Amazon. And Amazon will still be your competitor and they will be selling the item but your inventory is not there, it will be on your own website.

Don't be afraid of selling where the majority of buyers go go looking to spend money

    Hi lisah,

I have to agree with a few of the others. I think that if you are confident in ranking a quality product with that of which Amazon is already selling you can definitely make some considerable money.

Even if you are the second product ranking under Amazon you are almost guaranteed to make sales. Just make sure to do your research first. Such as current amount of people on Amazon searching for your product a month and how many sales your competitors are doing each day to get an idea of how much you can realistically sell.

Again as mentioned when Amazon sees products selling well they jump in. Depending on your expertise with selling on Amazon you can target markets with little competition to highly competitive markets. I am just not sure what level of comfort you have.

    Best of luck!

    It depends.

It depends on the product and category. But mostly it depends on the way you are thinking.

I'll leave aside all the issues about competing directly against amazon, as others in this thread have already commented on this.

Here's an alternative way to look at it. Who is number 1,2 and 3 for the product you are thinking about selling on amazon? It doesn't matter a whole lot whether it is amazon itself or others, you still have to compete.

With that as a viewpoint i've always encouraged those i've coached in ecommerce to compete if they are confident in the quality of their product and their ability to market strongly.

In addition, for many products being below an amazon product (or anyone else for that matter) who is top of the listing will still make you a whole heap of money.

I, myself, have products that earn a large sum of money whilst not being first, second or third in their particular listings. I have other products that are top, or second, in their listing that don't make as much.

Hope this helps to clarify your thinking.

    Good luck with your venture.
