For a first timer starting off with Amazon FBA how much should I expect to spend with a smaller wholesale order?

The answer to your question will vary depending on the wholesale source you are using. In general I recommend that people who are just starting out with an FBA business start out small. By this I mean sign up as an individual seller first. You can move up to a professional seller later when that makes sense. Initially your inventory can be minimal stuff such as new items from yard sales and retail arbitrage.

I still check the clearance rack at my local Target store every week. I also look for certain quick selling items on ebay to sell on Amazon. All these simple methods will make you some money as you get use to FBA and learn the use of your seller central account.

As for a good wholesale purchase I would suggest ordering the minimum available from the wholeseller. Be sure the items are new - beware of things such as "factory refurbished electronics". I also recommend using camelcamelcamel.com to check an items sales history.

Any time spent on Alibaba is too much time if you want to maximize profits.

Alibaba supplier listings are crammed with traders pretending to be manufacturers, so people think they are getting the best deal. You can't get the best deal from traders or wholesalers.

          The logic says it all:
          Q. Where do traders and wholesalers buy?
          A. Direct from the manufacturer.
          Q. If you can buy from the same source as the traders or wholesalers who gets to bank the trader's margin?
          A. You do, in addition to the smaller margin you would have made by buying from the trader or wholesaler.

I have taught hundreds of people how to buy small quantities direct from genuine manufacturers. I agree with DWaters that it is best to start out small.
