I want to start selling furniture on ebay. I have a dining room set which has a large china cabinet. I'm wondering if there's any way to ship this while keeping the shipping costs affordable?

Not really. I would put your listing up to include free pick up. Its up to the buyer then if they want to travel or use a delivery service out of their own pocket.

I find this keeps your listing more attractive as the associated costs are lower.

The other option is to find more area specific avenues to sell your dinning table. Craigslist, FB groups, local paper etc.

I agree with trying to post local through eBay Classifieds, Backpage, Oodle, etc but you're not making sales, you're simply marketing and hoping to increase foot traffic.

eBay is really pushing the Best Match search algorithm to focus on fast and free shipping. Obviously this is NOT a benefit for furniture sellers.

My suggestion would be to figure out what the maximum shipping amount would be for you to send throughout the lower 48 and try to build some of that cost into the price of the product. This way it appears shipping is only "$20" when your cost may be $60+. If you're selling brand names that are competing against other sellers, this could be the psychological advancement if they are charging the full amount in shipping. Accounting would just have to consider the cost of the product + shipping.

Yeah in order to get with the fast and free you would have to have decent margins on the furniture to absorb some of the shipping costs. Because shipping the furniture will not be cheap. Just shipping them standard will be a good amount.

I would be more inclined to try and sell these types of items of Craigs List. I get a wild hair from time to time and build rustic dollies on old casters and that's where I sell them.

I've tried craigslist, not having much luck. I have vintage furniture. I figured Ebay would be a larger market.

I haven't looked how your craigslist listing works.. but I will assume it would not cover the metro areas of both Akron and Cleveland correct? I would start with that.

If you want you could make some calls and see what shipping on one of your pieces would cost. I triangulate the from where I live ( WV ) So I use a Cali zip 90210 a zip in Maine 04010 and then one in Florida 33040 ( key west ) to get a better than rough idea what the shipping might be.

The other thing you might want to try is going "Dupre" style and dropping tiny little ads in some of the larger metro newspapers in the area.

Yeah, eBay would be a great market for selling these type of products.

Yeah, you may want to try local pick up for the furniture. Or you can ship it using a custom shipping provider, but these cost a lot of money. If you think you can make a decent amount of money off these pieces of furniture try doing that.
