Selling our cool concept site................! BUT where?

Where is the best place to sell our website? My partner and I have developed a cool site like 99designs but for the copywriting world.

CopyContest dot com was created to allow copywriters to submit their concepts in response to a customer's writing needs or brief. The writer who submits to best copy chosen by the customer receives a cash payment for their concept.

The problem most businesses and individuals face when in the market for copywriting, is there are limited resources. You are either stuck using one advertising firm that leaves your copywriting needs to one person in their marketing department and you get ideas from one person. Or if you're an individual you may choose to find a freelancer to write your copy for your (script, sales letter, article, etc) and yet you are still stuck with one idea from one person.

Why not let the world's best writers compete for your copywriting needs?
Submit your brief whether you need advertising copy for an ad you want to market or catchy jingle or slogan for your business or just simple writing for an article you need published. You can find all of this and more on our platform.

The writing possibilities are endless!

Think about it? Why not submit your brief and get tons of different ideas from talented writers from across the world and then when you are happy with the copy that catches your eye, you pick the winner!

It's that easy.

Knowing all of this would love to get feedback on how to offload this website. My partner had something come up so we have to offload this turnkey site.

I appreciate your feedback. We tried there but to be honest it was insulting on the offers we got. We literally want to walk away with what we had the site created for, which is $5000. You get domain, designs, everything and you own it out right with all social media. When we went into it we had the homepage alone designed for around $500. On Flippa we got offers of $250 for entire site. That is really insulting to be honest, that is why I came here to see if anyone had any other suggestions. I told some of the people that offered such insulting prices to go out and see if you can have a site like 99designs built for $250. There is no way possible you can have a site built on a PHP framework with a database for that cheap. That is crazy.

      Sorry for the rant.

Yeah, flippa is picky about stats so if you have no decent stats or traffic to validate any claim, no one will purchase it or they will under price you.

If it is worth that much, see your idea through. Get some people to post jobs on the site. Make the site look busy, this will impress some buyers.

Website buyers never by just concept sites, they by profit sites with the hopes of flipping it themselves and return on the investment.

You paid way too much in building copycontest dot com. Anybody can buy a 99Designs clone script for much less - several are available. Something with a lot of features like 360Contest from Agriya.com is $497 and there are less expensive clones available. The other advantages to commercial scripts (over custom coded sites) are lower costs for revisions, availability of upgrades, and script support.

I would suggest building the site into an established business earning money, then sell it for a multiple of revenue. You should be able to get two years of net profits so, if you can get your site to where it is only earning a steady $100 a week, you could get double the price you want if sales are stable.

The six dollars net profit shown in your Flippa auction is why your site was valued as a starter site. Your site made $20 in January, then earned nothing the following two months. The cost of building has little to do with final value. Also, it doesn't matter how a website is built, what it offers for products or services, or the cost to build, a clone site has little value without visitors and sales.

So, let me get this straight.

You dropped $5k on developing an idea, are unwilling to operate it or even test the concept for any period of time, and expect someone to come in and rescue you from under it?

Especially when, as Ken pointed out, there are clone scripts out there for less than 10% of your asking price?

That is just not how it works.

That is a piss poor excuse. If your partner can't continue on with his commitment, let him walk away from it. You can take it off his hands, or pay him his $2500 (over time if necessary) and run it yourself.

You do believe in it, don't you? Why not make it work, at least to the point you can prove the concept and set revenue expectations, then sell it for a realistic profit?

If you don't like what the market is bearing right now, you'll have to show the market that the site has actual earning power.

    "Potential" is worthless.

Agree with Jack in many ways... however potential in business sometimes get you somewhere.. IF you have gotten the idea off the ground. ( and I think this has gotten off the ground? )

I would suggest finding a business broker. Valley Biggs may be a bit out of your reach , but I might suggest Acquisitions Direct ( acquisitionsdirect.com ) and see what they might be able to do for you. if nothing else through the communication you will get a valid knowledgable 3rd party estimate of the worth.. and you may have to settle for the $250 or it may be worth more than the $5000 you are looking for. ( I am going to side on the more than side of this )

flippa is for chumps.. Brokers are for big boys! ( and yes I have used the services of both mentioned here )

Your insulted that you only got offers of $250 for a site that makes no money? I call that a reality check and a lesson learnt on how to lose 5k very quickly. As some have mentioned try to prove the concept, build revenue/profit. I've sold plenty of websites on flippa at fair value, based on earnings not on the cost to build the site

Regardless if it makes any money there is still value in the domain, design and coding. You think if you bought a lawn cutting business you would get all the maintenance contracts and they would just throw in all the lawn mowers and equipment for free. In this instance the site is the equipment. $250 is an absolute insult. No one could design this for that amount. Heck the homepage design alone cost more then that.

Yep. Apparently, the market says $250.

Seriously, though, the way to get a better price is to find the perfect buyer. Normally, you would hire a broker for that, but with no revenue don't bother.

You could try to treat it like a glorified domain sale and send a sales letter to everyone you can find with a copywriting-related site.

But again, without revenue, I wouldn't get my hopes up too high.

You just built a lawnmowing business in the desert, my friend. It seems the lawns are few and far between. This business needs someone with passion to turn it into something special (as most businesses do). Now you have to find that needle in the haystack.

Or, as I said earlier, step up and be that person.
