Ebay vs Own online store

As I mentioned in another post, I had started a jewelry store but so far no success at all:
Hjewel.com
Some members of here gave me great comments and I am going to work on it, but I thought about this question many times:
Ebay vs My own store
I always try to compare the advantage and disadvantage, and think about I should just try Ebay and forget my own store. But then when I think about I want to have my own brand of a shop and have brand value instead of just mainly fight for lower price in Ebay, then I stop. I also heard about many bad comments of Ebay like they can just close your account for no reason so make a living out of it is very risky in long term.

What is your comment?

Having your own online store alone will NOT attract buyers!

You need to work on the marketing side

And selling on eBay simultaneously is also a good idea.. it's not an "either.. or" situation..

do both, and remember that no one can shut down your own store, while eBay can take down ur account for any reason they want..

ur in full control of your own store and customers.. just have it marketed the right way...

If you need help on this, let me know..

If these two can help each other, then I think can do both, but they don't really help each out since Ebay bans any marketing of personal store. It would take all time to do marketing and work for a store already, I feel like if I do both then just get worse in both.

Agree with this. With few SKU's, it'e easy to do both yourself but obviously if you have larger inventory you will need help from other folks (or automation).

If I can earn enough to hire someone to do the inventory job that is definitely more successful than my current job.

  • I think you should sell on eBay and your own site. The more places where you are visible, the better. Definitely work on marketing for your own store, and do some marketing for your eBay store as well. Marketing for an eBay site is OKAY - whats not allowed is marketing that directs sales away from eBay and to your own website. Maybe pay for some ads for your eBay store, and focus on creating a brand presence for your own website.

Is it really easy to sell on Ebay? I mean having real sell records. How much does Eday charge you? I tried to sell some old stuff in Ebay before and they charge me so much like 30% after all charges.

This thread inspired me to write a blog post about using 'platforms' like eBay versus running your own store. I think we're in for a turbulent time with respect to acquiring customers and growing our businesses. Mobile is changing the game!

There are plugins ( I use WPLister ) that allow you to take the inventory you have on your WP/Woo Site and place the listings on e-bay. Its kinda a no brainer. If its jewelry you have and you are Making it.. you can alos do the same thing with Etsy. you can get real funky with a split theme the setup and share the same woocommerce file and do one of each from the same site.

It's easy selling on Ebay and yes you pay a price to sell but you not only are you selling items your getting a reputation for you and your business so having the website will show your not just a fly by night Ebay seller.
Let people know after they buy on Ebay about your store one way is when you ship them an item include a business card with your website and offer a discount for their friends like 10%.

Use to do a lot for a local company who had U.S sources for overstock and return store items but most of it they sell here in a 20,000 square foot brick and mortar store because a lot of items are large like Tv's furniture now so I now just help friends and family sell.As cost of shipping within Canada is expensive for low price/profit items. But I can tell you the added business card with any item you sell on Ebay with a simple Thank You and your website address on it goes a long way and helps for more sales, good feedback ratings and referrals from your buyers to friends and family.

There are a couple of good things about eBay. One is the traffic, and the other is the brand. But if you're planning to sell on eBay, be prepared to deal with a bunch of bullies. I'm not talking about the buyers, though you will get your share of those (mostly people abusing the feedback system). I'm talking about the know-it-all douchebags who run the company.

For the brand factor, I feel it is a two head sword. I spend more time developing a "brand" username in Ebay then I spend less time on developing my own .com brand. While I am taking a big risk that spend so much time and effort on my eBay acount and may just suddenly one day banned.

First move a step towards building your own online store by selecting the best e-commerce platform which provides you the procedure to build a perfect online store.
EBay from one the top leading e-commerce website most of the customers like to purchase the products or stuff from here.
But it doesn't that mean that your store will go down, the only thing you have to do while starting an e-commerce business is do marketing by putting your full effort. Then nobody can stop you by touching the roof and from success.
      Any practical suggestion?

Yes, keep them both. Your eBay store is vital for traffic generation then upsell your eBay buyers through your own online shop. eBay buyers usually stick to eBay and don't feel comfortable going to other shops outside eBay so enticing them with discount vouchers and other incentives can be a big help.

Only if you can find a way to keep getting people visit your store, which is a serious hard task.

Use QMoses online marketplace instead. You can list your products at http://www.qmoses.com indefinitely and they get sold quickly.

Many ebay sellers that I've bought from also have their own websites. What they do is they'll give you free credit or "cash back offer" after your purchase on ebay and try to get you to their website to avoid ebay fees.

You would rather have customers browsing your site rather than lurking around ebay comparing prices, wouldn't you?

Some smart websites also offer "refer your friend" bonus too. So if you don't want to advertise your site you can try those tactics. Repeat customers are gold!
