My Product Launch: Best Approach and Strategy

Hello,

I am manufacturing my product as we speak, its a very exciting feeling to get things moving, but incredibly daunting since I've never done this before.

Hence, why Im here...

I'm an American living in Thailand, building a business selling a handmade product to initially sell locally at markets I have access to, and eventually back in the States. I want to soft launch the product here in Thailand, selling to tourists and travelers. Although I think it can sustain and prove to be viable here, it isn't my ultimate goal to build brick and mortar here. The soft launch will be to get early learning and iterate designs as I go. I will continue to sell in Thailand, but ultimately begin selling in America.

During this time selling at a Thai market, I'd like to begin building a website or begin building the brand, convey my social mission, take awesome product pics, get reviews on my site from locals here, etc. Basically tell my story and how awesome my product is.

Due to expensive shipping from Thailand I don't know how viable it will be to bang out the marketing, driving traffic to my site when my pricing/shipping times will be less competitive until I enter the US using FBA. Shipping will take weeks, and I loose tracking once it hits American shores...I cant compete shipping from Thailand initially, maybe for friends and family though...but still. Im a little torn on this, as I could build the store and just offer it and see how it goes.

Should I just set up a site and run a "prelaunch" campaign collecting emails through a landing page (best options?), or since I'll likely use Shopify later on, sign up now and just disable the shopping cart and collect emails...possible? Run FB ads and drive traffic to my brand? Entice folks with coupons free products etc. I obviously want to do that when I have Amazon presence since that what ill need to succeed there. Does it make sense to do the prelaunch and collect emails offering promos or whatever I decide, even though my launch into the America is tentative. This step confuses me a bit, which is like...the first step.

The reason for the slow launch into American is because my product isnt quite where it needs to be to compete in ecosystems like Amazon. When I think American market, I think Amazon, is that wrong for someone starting out who eventually wants to have healthy traffic through my own site? Why not both? Should I just blast the marketing now (prelaunch) and hope my site will prevail?

Since my company is a social enterprise at its core, Im also concerned this will be very difficult to convey on Amazon. Is that right? Do people care on Amazon? I want the traffic to my site since the story is compelling and will be a huge part of my product position in both markets.

As you can probably tell, Im a little confused as to next steps here. I know planning is key to a launch and I could really use some feedback to this effect.

What are the best approches (things im not even thinking about) to a soft launch into two markets like this? Simultaneous entry?

Thanks in advance for the input. I look forward to hearing it

I had a booth on a farmers market here in Berlin that was frequented by lots of tourists and that definitely drove sales in the online shop. One thing that worked out really well was a simple QR-Code printed on a white sheet of paper. Better than any flyer or whatever we tried. I suppose people just wanted to find out where it gets them.

    Best of luck,

    Mirko

Okay, let's see if I can help here (i own my own-branded physical products, initially sourced internationally then sold on amazon usa).

Start with one market only. Which one, i don't know enough about you and the product to tell. Personally, I would start immediately on amazon usa.

Get together enough stock to be able to 'test' it. NB - a problem with people who are 'married' to their product is that don't test, don't test enough, or are so psychologically 'wedded' to their product that they can't take good decisions about it because of their emotional investment. I don't know if that is you, i'm just giving you some insight from operating ecommerce for years (and from coaching many others in it too).

I don't know what your product is (and i don't want to know/ don't tell anyone what it is either). If it's small and light enough you may be able to air-freight it straight into amazon fba. They will take over warehousing and fulfillment from there. If it's not then you could ship it by sea (takes longer but costs less).

After you have tested it, and only if it is successful, THEN build your own ecommerce store. I recommend Shopify for most retailers. NB - don't then stop selling it on amazon as you may well find that sales on amazon always exceed those of your private store (I know a number of people in this category).

I make 6 figures a month doing something similar, as i said, having built up my own-branded physical products company. For the right product it's doable, with time and effort, and can be extremely profitable (either personally or for the larger social good).

    Good luck with your venture.

    First things first...

Create your brand and register your brand.. if you can brand the items you are selling, do it!
the you can start working on prelaunch promotion, business plan and marketing plan.

    get your online presence:

1 - website with your brand name
2 - your Social awareness, twitter, facebook, instagram, pinterest, google+ and others
3 - get a virtual office in a major city, this will give security to your customers and you can run it form anywhere in the world, with an average cost from 15 do 50 usd month

look for inexpensive help on fiverr

these are the core points, but there is much more work involved, but i think a prelaunch is really good.

if you need any help, PVT me!

    take care

Sorry for the late reply everyone, but super happy to have the great responses!!

So, I guess you could say that I am married to the product only because Im expanding upon an existing social business here in Thailand, and that although I will have room for developing other products, I am rolling this one out as it is a product that I have designed and is handcrafted, also its where my team is most skilled. Its is a trending product, although there is a major company dominating the market - a concern of course. But the industry and products popularity is growing over the last two years tremendously....only wish I got to it a year or so ago.

I do plan to roll out on Amazon/FBA (shipping from Thialand is an option maybe for Ebay or shopify site) and feel this is a quick way to test it. Is it better to have a landing page that tells the social story of the project with a redirect to the Amazon listing to start, avoiding shopify for now? Suggestions on what to use for that? Thats kind of where my heads at.

I like AZ in terms of their customer service provided and the email platform to follow up.

So to start, I would be at the local market and sell around town here in Thailand. Get things going with Amazon and have a landing page telling the story and redirecting to AZ to build sales and reviews. Socil strategy included obviously.

Should I just not even go for shopify right now since my ads will feed my Amazon listing first? Whats a good amount of time necessary to guage the success of this strategy?

I love the idea of using Fiverr for things along the way, and certainly will look in to it.

Im working on my brand at the moment, getting the logo made and setting up professional pictures.

With a prelaunch promotion, would this be once my Amazon listing is up and ready to roll? Like drive sales and reviews through giving product away or major discounts?

Really, my apologies for what are probably questions I can dig up online, which I really have. But Im jsut not really confident with all information out there and really value this forum.

thanks guys, this all really helps, and look forward to your input!

There's nothing to stop you setting up Shopify as you aim at amazon, it's just a distraction, time and energy suck that's all.

Unless you have a way of driving traffic to your Shopify site then it will simply sit there not doing much for you. If your way of driving traffic to it is to advertise then you would be diluting your ad budget. Instead I would concentrate all your ad budget on amazon and facebook ads for the amazon listing.

Without knowing the product and market it's impossible to tell how long it will take to guage things. Different products will result in different timings. I usually give my new products at least 6 months, and often 9-12 months if they are selling but not in the volume I have set for them.

Yes use Fiverr for tasks like product photography. Sometimes you have to work through some 'duds' on Fiverr to find the right person but that's okay. It's not going to break your bank (hopefully).

One thing, be careful with reviews. Don't ever be tempted to buy amazon reviews from any site. Ever. Amazon are very hot on this and getting better all the time. Don't get on amazon's bad books.

Also, don't start advertising until you have about 10 reviews up otherwise your ad budget will get waisted sending people to your listing who then don't buy because of lack of reviews. This will also damage your conversion rate which, in turn, sends negative signals to the amazon search algorithm making it more difficult for your product to climb the amazon search rankings.

Good luck with things, I hope you make a real success of it.

ZanyZebra, you are so incredibly helpful, thank you.

Im thinking, since Im not a web designer, I might have to hire out a landing page design and possibly host on my friend's server. The almost $40 a month fee fro leadpages.com seem rather steep. Are there some obvious benefits to using them? I also want to convey my message with pics that would probably be more than just a single page. It would be nice to have something that was longer but still limited navigation if any at all. Maybe landing page is the wrong word Im usign for what Im invisioning. I think maybe I need a full site without a shopping cart, with the redirect right smack on the front page?

Also, great advice on not advertising on Amazon without having 10 reviews, I wouldn't have thought this but makes a lot of sense. I will certainly not pay for reviews and want to follow the rules absolutely. I have heard of giving product away for unbiased reviews...Amazon ok with this? Do they reviews have to come from those who purchased through my Amazon listing? Is there some place I can read about launch strategy to this effect so I can quickly build those reviews? Friends and family? I live in Thailand and have many I can sell to here for reviews, but they wouldn't purchase through amazon? Could it just be a delivery option to purchase on Amazon and I deliver here in Thailand? Not sure how to best approach getting these reviews quickly.

        Thank you

          You're welcome.

          1. No particular advantage to LeadPages other than it is very easy to set up and operate. I sometimes use them and sometimes have landing pages custom made.

          2. On any site a page with a big "Buy at Amazon" button that the links straight through to your amazon listing page is easily doable (again, I've sometimes used this tactic myself).

          3. Yes you can give away product on amazon but it's best to have people buy it, even if at a very low price. Important, if you are requesting a review you must make it clear that it should be unbiased (amazon come down hard if they think you are manipulating reviews in any way).

          4. On reviews it's best if they purchased because it then shows up on the listing as a verified review (ie it shows visitors that the person reviewing actually purchased it on amazon).

          5. If you are selling on amazon USA and your friends are in Thailand they may not be able to purchase it because amazon won't deliver it, depending on the product and the category.

          Hope this helps.

          Good luck with things.
