Lots of people add products to their cart even if they don't strongly intend to buy anything.

They might get shocked at the price of all the things adding up,be put off by postage costs, be put off by your payment methods or just change their mind.

It is frustrating, especially since you say you can't follow them up via email.

Take a critical look at your checkout process or even better , get someone else to check it over.

You are using Bigcommerce and depending what plan you use, they have abandoned cart notification built in. Are you on their lowest plan? How much are you charging for shipping. I have found this is a big determinate most of the time...

From a technical point of view, it depends where and how data persist is taking place. If client side persist is taking place, then the most probable way its doing this is by using cookies. Can you confirm if these clients have cookies enabled? Personally, I don't like this method because its easily hackable.

Server side persist is my prefered method. Its accomplished by creating something called a session state. Servers running IIS, for example, have configuration settings to control the duration of session state. If you have a session state timer set to zero, or just a few seconds, this could produce the error you describing. If your developing in ASP, session state settings are also maintained at the application level in the app.config.

  • We wrote an article not too long ago with researched statistics on why shoppers jump ship before completing a purchase, and suggestions on how to combat each issue. May be worth a look? You can find the article here.
