Looking to begin in dropshipping

Hey all! Been browsing and lurking and reading up a lot on this forum. There is so much great information!

A little background about myself. I currently work in online marketing on the ad development end. I do understand web analytics to a certain point (I kinda have to). A coworker and myself were chatting up about how I wanted to start something small on the side with the potential to grow into something huge. He mentioned drop shipping. I have been researching this subject probably 3-4 hours a day since then and it has captivated my interestes like you will not believe. At first I was debating an ANS, since it's more close to what I deal with on an every day basis and it still isn't a bad idea since there are plenty of successful affiliate site owners out there. I feel like cutting out the middle man and drop shipping a product would be more of a path I would like to go down in hopes of learning and becoming successful with multiple drop shipping websites (in the long run).

So far I have been doing the market research for a niche and man... this is SO tough and frustrating. I am not worried about site design, structure and function. Nor am I worried about web hosting and advertising. SEO is on a shaky grounds for me, but I deal with a bit of it on a daily basis.

The niche research is painful and I feel like I keep running into dead ends. I'm using google keyword planner to kind of browse certain niche keywords to see how much monthly traffic derives from "x" keywords and I'm cross referencing them with a trial of a software I found online called Market Samurai.

So far, my ideas on products have either yeilded incredibly HIGH competition markets or incredibly LOW competition to a point where I don't even see the low end being worth it (according to Market Samurai, by low competition I mean products/keywords that yeild top 2k potential click on a page 1 google search with a total of like 20-30 SEO competition keywords that match the search apparently the data is from Bing)

I have been reading to kinda stray away from incredibly high competing markets and to be honest it makes sense it's a shame because my passions are extremely high for electronics (gaming, PC building, graphic and web design, etc...). I have also been reading to try and stay away from going down the passion road as sometimes it could yeild a terrible outcome. If I was already bringing in a large amount of money to throw away on PPC advertising and had a site live with great SEO backing it then that's a different story. I'm starting from scratch. I have knowledge of the online sales/advertising industry but that's about it. I'm also avoiding incredibly low competition markets because it's a clear sign most of the time those products don't even sell.

Basically, what I'm trying to ask is.. what's the sweet spot in terms of taffic, searchs and SEO competition should I be looking for to launch a decent start-up drop shipping company?

I appreciate the time you guys take to read this if it's read at all!
Back to the keyword and niche grind for me!

Thanks.
