I'm currently taking over an eCommerce role within my company and would like some guidance/resources .

To start, what are some common KPIs related to eCommerce and how do those KPIs help drive your decisions?

Any help appreciated!

This can vary a lot depending on your objectives and overall commercial goals.

But to give you an idea, some of the KPIs that I use to manage my own-brand ecommerce business include:

Raw sales performance (using different time periods, eg per day, per week, per month)
Comparative sales performance (compared to same period last year)
Total value per order (averaged out)
Total cost of goods (averaged out)
Profit margin per order (again averaged out, as i shift prices up and down)
Purchase rate (from viewing a product through to purchase)
Returning customer rate (as opposed to new customer)
Cart abandonment rate (both raw and comparative)
Inventory (levels for each individual product)
    Overall ad spend
Ad spend per product (averaged out)
Overall traffic for web site (using different time periods)
Overall traffic per product page (time periods)
    Overall traffic per promotion
    Traffic source
    Review ratings

This gives you an idea. There are actually more that i use but won't list them all here. I use the data from these, and others, to drive my daily management decisions.

I own a six figure per month ecommerce business and things can be overwhelming if I do not keep on top. The way I do so is to base decisions on facts and data rather than my feelings or on the latest problems. That way the business keeps developing and keeps income increasing.

I hope this helps. Good luck with your ventures.

Zany gave a great list of specific KPI's to track for an ecommerce business. What he didn't tell you, is that Google Analytics can be configured to collect all of this data automatically for you. You can even automate it so that it sends you a weekly report every Monday morning.

In addition there's some really great ecommerce features in GA, that need to be explicitly enabled and configured. These do a great job of checkout tracking through the funnel, product views and details, and other really great charts and data.
