Private Label Packaging

Does anyone here can recommend me a user-friendly free software I can use to design my Private Label Packaging?
I'm not at all an expert in graphic design but this is a task I'd like to do myself instead of paying someone else for it.
I've been talking with the packaging factory (they can just print my designs on the package) and they mentioned Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop but it seems that they are subscription services..

I'd appreciate any feedback :-)

Best Regards

If you are not an expert in design don't do this yourself.
Your product label/package is the first thing your customers will see, this is your brand.
You can get someone experienced in package design in fiverr and this is inexpensive.

In many countries, for a number of products, there are very specific, legal, requirements around packaging and the attendant imaging and wording.

Be very clear what the requirements are for your product packaging in the countries you decide to sell in. If you expand into different territories after a while, one of the first things you should do is review packaging requirements for these additional countries.

If you decide to have someone else design the packaging you will still be liable for any mistakes that a designer may make for your product packaging.

In most sizeable businesses they employ packaging specialists who deal exclusively with these issues as they are often not as simple as they may appear at first.

None of above precludes designing your own packaging but it does mean you have to educate yourself and be clear with the design parameters.

    Hope this helps.

    Good luck with your venture.

I completely agree with the first two answers: Don't underestimate the importance of the first impressions and the legal stuff!

But for your question, I'm highly satisfied with Scribus (scribus.net). Like other open source tools, it may be a bit geeky at first glance, but I do all the merchandise stuff with it and it works great, once you get your head around the concepts. Only downside: it freezes sometimes. So, save early, save often (you should anyway).

    Best of luck,

    Mirko

    • 99 Designs is worth a look for this. Pay the $400 buck and get a bunch or designers to do it correctly.

Save time, don't buy Illustrator. If you don't already own it, then your packing should not be how you learn to design in it.

Who is doing your packaging by the way if you dont mind me asking?

        Hi LeatherDropshipping and thanks for contributing;

The packaging is a second stage-process since I'll be testing my product first and see how it sells and if is worth it to follow up with branding and everything involved.
For now I'll be sending the case-packed items to the FBA warehouses with a simple custom label; #100 units will give me an idea of this by keeping my investment relatively low, but since I'm confident on the success of it I'm looking forward and seek information regarding the packaging.

        Kind Regards

        • Sounds good. I would say a decent label / custom packing is a good thing to have even in a limited test market. Presentation definitely makes a difference depending on what your selling.

          Best of luck to you!

You're definitely right; that is something I was considering to set up from the very beginning but package-manufacturers need a minimum of #1000 pieces for me to get competitive prices and keep the margins high.
In a marketing-twist I could still claim environment-concerns as the reason to keep packaging at a minimum ;-), at least at this stage of my venture.

            Thanks for your feedback!

yeah definitely go to a 99designs, you get many designers submitting many ideas rather than scratching around yourself or working with one local designer back and forth for days or weeks. There are different level packages from a few logo designs to full marketing packages with many multiple designs. are there other competitors to 99designs that are worth checking out?
