I've posted some of this info on another section of the site and haven't had any luck so thought it might be worth trying in the e-commerce section, hopefully someone might have some ideas........

I'll give you a bit of background on what i'm trying to do here and see if anyone has any suggestions / ideas or if indeed there are individuals who would like to work with me on this. and maybe make some money.

I'm an silkscreen artist with my own studio in the based U.K and have been producing and releasing prints for over a decade. I've always self distributed my work up to date as I have a large number of previous customers on my database and have built up a bit of a following (mainly in europe / u.k. and the U.S.) with many customers coming back and buying new releases that i put out and making my work known to their friends, but after many years of refining my craft , i'm in a position where i'm starting to get some interest from galleries and i've also found a handful of quality online retailers who are going to start moving some of my output. Saying this these galleries and retailers i will be working with will be taking new work that i produce (some of which will be commissions that i produce bespoke for their market often large scale versions based on what i have created before as well as some smaller pieces from my back catalogue).

I've used multiple ebay accounts over the last few years and have sold very well on there, but i tend to sell the work about half the price i would on my website, however i'm constantly getting booted off ebay for keyword spamming tactics, and i'm getting a bit long in the tooth to continue with this method, although it generates good regular income so i will at least keep doing this until i'm fully integrated with the gallery / retail situations.

I currently have around thirty prints available which sell really well when i get the right people traffic to view these pieces, I have also just about finished another two prints this month (both are editions of 100 pieces) and have two more scheduled for production early next month. The total value of these prints even if i sell them at thirty pounds each which is around half they go for on my website equates to pretty much half the value of the property i currently rent! So i need to start and move some of this work in volume which means i need a lot of traffic. i'm looking for U.S. + Europe + U.k. traffic as this is where my work tends to sell from past experience.

I'd done promo codes before online where people hit my site and can redeem a promotional code to get for instance 50% discount against a print / multiple print purchases, but have never had the time to really persure how to get these promo codes in front of vast numbers of pople to attract the volume of traffic i need on a regular basis to make it work.. I'm tempted to try this as offers always seem to get people to invest in my work initially and usually once they have purchased one they tend to come back time and time again.

Does anyone have any ideas how i could go about this???? Or are there any members who can offer this kind of service.?
My skills really are in the production of my work and although i've used the net for many many years and have managed to live of these proceeds i'm just not really fluent in all this ever evolving digital marketing stuff hence i thought this site would be a good place to ask people... Even if i don't go down the route of promo codes i'd be interested to hear how others would approach this potentially lucrative situation.

I'm hoping to be moving into a new studio space over the next few weeks which means i'll be in a position to get someone to help me doing all the packing and postal side of things which will free up my time to just get on with the production, so i'd like to start making inroads on this a.s.ap.

Any help very much appreciated.....Hope this all makes sense.

You could try demo targeted ads on facebook which aren't that expensive. Be sure to target the ads towards a certain age range or demographic that buys your work. --You can pay for a certain number of ad clicks on FB.

Instagram is a great selling platform, too. Check out inselly.com

hi - thanks for getting back to me.

i've had a look at instagram and if i'm not mistaken you can't run it on a mac computer? which i would need to do, you need an android phone by the looks of it. i'm afraid I still use an old brick phone that only texts and calls.

I' have also tried facebook advertising recently, i tried the impressions route first and that never seemed to do much bar a couple of hits to the site. I think if i was going down that route i'd have to pay for the traffic to hit the site directly which looks like it costs a lot more....

Are they any other cheap ways of getting website clicks direct to the site?

    Hi

I think I'd be tempted to open a store on etsy.com and list your work there. It was created for people such as yourself.

You just need to ensure that the images of your work are of a high standard, and I also suggest you re-list some items every week, as they'll end up higher in etsys search results.

They have also recently started a wholesale section which you could apply to join. Large retailers search that section for products to put in their stores.

PM me your site address as I am interested in what you produce.

    All the best

    • I second the suggestion to open a shop on Etsy. It already has great traffic of people looking for creative, unique items - all you'd have to do is optimize your listings for better search results. I believe there are also paid ad options within Etsy, so that your items will show up at the top of the results page. I think your items would do really well on Etsy, and Etsy shoppers are willing to pay good money to support artists.

Let us know what you think!

The industry for commercial quantities of artwork, in Australia at least, has moved towards print on demand.

As both a retailer and wholesaler of framed images I've observed the trends over the last 25 years and since around 2007 the move has been away from mass production into a more bespoke model.

In Australia I would suggest you contact Chamton as they have established the print on demand model and if your work is desirable then they could add it to their POD range.

They were producing catalogues on DVD and online but recently they have gone back to a printed catalogue that is hardbound. + supplements.

This has immediately increased sales in my experience because clients enjoy the offline experience somewhat and they also enjoy that they can get the image in any size on either paper or canvas.

The issue with Bespoke online production and sales through sites like Etsy and Ebay is that there is so much content that is hard to stand out and be found.

Going to the influencers...like the galleries...or the wholesale print distributors like Chamton may be a better way to go.

Don't sacrifice what you have got but look outside those supply chains to open up the pathways to greater success.

    Best regards,

thanks for the feedback so far - very much appreciated. sorry for the delay in posting back up i've been lost in the dark room for the last 24 hours! getting some new work ready for release.

etsy i have tried in the past, it has to be said I never had any success on there and much of the work seems to be sold very cheaply - people seem so eager to sell they will almost give it away. Even if they are trying the approach of pile it high - sell it cheap they would have to sell vast quantities to do this to make it worthwhile. Also i think the point was raised about products being lost on there in the mire of all the other items. I totally agree with this. The reason why i've had so much success with ebay is because i've keyword spammed on mass over several accounts.... Many people would frown upon this technique but its enabled me to put my work in front of a new audience every week for ten years whilst i've developed my practice. Its very rare that I will even list under the art category as the work will be lost in the haze of other artwork - hence more competition. I tend to list under any items that will generate sufficient traffic to my listings then cross polinate the traffic over to my other listings using a scrolling gallery. Its works well but there is always constant intervention from the powers above! I'm amazed i've got away with this for so long………

In terms of print on demand - its definitely a route i wish to stay away from ( i should have pointed this out earlier in my post ) as all the stuff i produce is created by hand using a silkscreen print process often *******ising traditional print techniques to create something unique and i sell on the fact that i've had to put the physical effort and energy into its production to create it rather than just push a button a keyboard. I can definitely see why P.O.D could be seen as a good money generator though, its just not the direction for me but thanks for the input.

The point of influencers though was definitely right in my eyes as well - once this type of work is in the right set and setting it makes perfect sense to people, and ultimately this will be the best route in the long term i'm sure which would free up my time to concentrate on production. The next few weeks are going to see a few different channels open up for me in terms of distribution, which will be interesting to see what happens when the targeted traffic of established retailers sees the work.

Saying that though I still want to persue some traffic generation options / ideas for my site as its key to moving some work in bulk and will always allow me to make sales independently. i really want to stay away from etsy / Facebook / twitter i've used them all before and find them a very depressing experience if i'm honest. What i really want In an ideal world is to to start getting 500 hits per day to my site. This number targeted or otherwise should start to move the stock I have, as what I produce seems to have broad appeal. Saying that i'd ideally like the audience to be in the 25 - 50 age group. That would be perfect from my sales data i've worked out so far.

Whats the options here? - google adverts are expensive for to clicks direct to the site. Banner ads - i know really nothing about how to go about this but if they were on the right sites i feel they could work….. youtube videos - a lot of my work would definitely be of interest people into music, particularly this into electronic music. Would it be worth while doing some videos on mass but using keywords in the titles of the video related to electronic artists that get views and use their music with my artwork and links to the site. i'm only throwing ideas around here as i don't know if youtube would class this as bad etiquette and throw me off / downgrade the traffic….. Im not suggesting that this would generate anyway near what I need but might start to work in some small way without having to do Facebook / etsy etc.

I'm completely open to suggestions here? I have the means of production to create the physical work, I've developed many processes and techniques that ultimately makes a striking product. I'm selling stock on a regular basis and I know theres a market for what I do and the uptake on what i offer is very good, the website I run is simple and portrays the work very well, the only missing link now is traffic……. traffic and more traffic……….. There has to be some ways that I havent thought about............

Marketing a business is a full-time job in itself. If you don't use social media, folks won't know where to find you. In fact, the demographic you're looking for is on facebook, as all of the younger kids have moved on to snapchat, etc... leaving facebook for the more mature crowd.

It's rare for an online business to be successful without utilizing social media/blogging. If you find it depressing, you may need to hire someone to do the marketing for you. Or get your work into galleries where the staff will market for you.

The videos sound like a good idea, too and fairly easy to do.

I still think it's worth you considering Etsy despite your previous experience.
We have our products listed in a lot of places, because I look on it as "A sale is a sale" I'm not particularly bothered where they come from.

As Violet says, you're going to have to at least consider social media, as it's just to valuable a source of targetted traffic.

I'd also love to have 500 visitors a day in that age group as it happens lol.

    Anyways....all the best to you.

      Thanks for the feedback......

I think i'm going to focus my energies on some youtube videos in the short term and see where that heads. I cant help think that this could at least start the process of generating some new traffic and some interest on top of what i'm already doing with the multiple ebay accounts. I feel the fact that combining the audio and the visual elements in some tailored content might be the best option for me.

I do have a facebook account and have tried some adverts on there but it has to be said nothing comes close to the conversions i get out of the ebay system i've been working with. I've never seen myself as a gambler, but its got to be said i think the ebay strategies i've been adopting must provides a similar rush! Must be the uncertaintly of making it through every week........

I've found about three art sites related to what i'm doing as well which might also allow me to do some banner adverts for a reasonable price so i'm also going to have a good think about that as well. At least its all receptive traffic...

With Youtube you can generate traffic but it does take time.

One thing you should consider is remarketing or retargeting via your website and Youtube.

Any traffic you send to your site can be retargeted and then you can serve them ads with your images in them.

With most people requiring multiple exposure to an image to get them to take action you will find this a cost effective strategy to test.

Another area where some of my clients are achieving success is in partnering with corporations in a variety of promotions.

For example we recently had fashion week here and all the spring carnival type atmosphere that goes with it.

One of our artists produced works for a major property management company that was running promotions for one of its up market shopping centres.

Every store participated in the promotion with artwork being commissioned and displayed within the centre.

This particular "event" is something they do each year and the selected artist does very well.

There are other instances "horse racing"..."motorsport"...

Not that the artist is producing racing pictures...

...the key is that the supporters of these types of events and their client bases are cashed up and...

...want to be part of a trend...they are buyers.

Listen to my advice or not but I do speak from "boots on the ground" experience in this area.

The other approach is to get to know the "kingmakers" when it comes to art.

These are the people that have followers...clients...that buy artworks that they recommend.

They buy year after year because each time they buy the artwork is appreciating in value.

People like to see their investments improve.

This is something you need to comprehend if you want to break into that market.

The king makers like artists who can produce the goods and show consistent production and partnership over the years.

Personally I'm lucky because I've helped a number of artists, influencers and patrons in my time...

...that's why I'm still in the industry.

sound advice all round.. I very much appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. Its going to be interesting to see what develops here as i start implementing some of these ideas.

I've actually thought about getting in touch with interior designers before but have never had enough free time in the past to really make a good effort with this as the production of the work i create has always taken up pretty much all my time. its only now that i've managed to get in front of myself this year that i think i can probably break off from what i'm doing and start making some inroads with this.

I wonder what the best method of engaging these people is - i'm sure there must be some specialist forums somewhere on the net that i could try....

i think if I do manage to get moved into the new studio space i'm hoping to and obtain the large size printing press i've got my eye on, working with people such as interior designers on a commission basis could be a good progression...

What about getting in touch with some interior designers - you would be able to bump up your prices if they are getting works of art, especially if they are limited editions.

You never did send me a link to your art, but that's ok. My last 2 exes are artists, so I know how artists can be a bit self-obsessed. Yes, I'm generalizing.

right folks i'm back - sorry its taken a while. i've been tied up screenprinting like crazy and finishing new work so have only just managed to free up some time so i can start making inroads on some of whats been discussed above. I have actually started to build up a list of interior designers to approach as i've sold quite a bit of work to individuals in this field to date so thought its as good a place to start as any........

in the meantime i'm trying to make contact with an ebay expert to pick their brains as i've had a lot of success on there and i'm wanting to expand on this in the short term....... if anyone fits this description or can point me in the right direction that would be very much appreciated.
