Amazon and Ebay Selling

Okay, I know I'm being lazy here but does anyone have any good resources or know of past threads that had great information on either of these two topics?

I am in the process of creating my first dropship/e-commerce store and I feel like I have building websites, managing a business and the marketing of a website well covered. I see a lot of people talking about selling on amazon and ebay here but I'm not quite sure what tactics they are talking about and I'm getting the impression that they are significantly important strategies to sell/make money.

If you know of any good information on these processes or can give me the rundown other than "sell on amazon" I would be thankful!!

    You are correct.

As it relates to amazon there are significantly important strategies. Critically, they return very different levels of income too.

I don't want to be seen 'promoting' in reply to your question but if you message me I point you to the resource.

    Good luck with your ventures.

  • Great question. I'm not tooting my own horn (okay, I am) but I've sold on eBay for a VERY long time. I love it.

Actually, I'm getting into Amazon selling (FBA) and have liked what I see there too. I'll become stupidly successful at it before I can say I'm an authority on it - like I am on eBay.

Amazon and eBay have their pros and cons, but I like eBay for it's research and predictability. I like Amazon for its conversion rates.

I used to advocate creating your own website. However, this is getting pretty difficult.

Just ask yourself: When you go online, do you buy from a niche website? Or do you buy on Amazon/eBay?

If you're like me, all of your purchases are on Amazon or eBay.

    THAT is where I'd go.

I actually am creating my own website still. Might be the traditionalist in me but I just like to have it and work from there and I have some experience in it so it's not TOO hard.

But what I'm looking for are primer articles on the strategies behind selling on amazon or ebay. Blog posts on the basics of what you need to know. Currently, literally all I know is that they can make you money but HOW? I know, that's a huge question that a lot of people here have spent significant amount of time answering.

I'm hoping for links to articles that say "this is what's happening at the most basic level" mastery will come later...

      Thanks for your response!!

Creating a website is the easy part. Generating traffic and sales is a different story. Amazon & Ebay have name recognition, you don't. That's how the Sellers on Amazon & ebay benefit.

Essentially there are two ways a third party seller can sell on Amazon. Either as Merchant Fulfilled or Fulfillment By Amazon (FBA). There are significant advantages to using the FBA method in almost all situations.

You ship (at low cost shipping) your inventory (or a portion of it) to Amazon's warehouses and then they take care of selling and shipping to the customer, any refunds, returns or other customer satisfaction issues are also taken care of by Amazon. You basically mange your inventory and get paid by Amazon.

Well that sounds like a pretty awesome deal. I take if from your description though, that FBA is not an option for drop shippers, only merchant fulfilled. Does merchant fulfilled sell in the regular amazon marketplace with all of the other products? How do they know who sold it when more than one merchant is selling the same item?

When you look at the Amazon listings you will clearly see which items are sold by which sellers. For example lets say it says there are 5 New listing, click on that. You will see the five listings. Some may say "Fulfilled by Amazon", those are FBA sellers. Others may say "ships from New York", those are merchant fulfilled sellers. You may also see that Amazon might also be selling that same item. So yes, it is all in the same marketplace. However Amazon Prime shoppers have the option to filter their search results so they only see FBA, merchant fulfilled can be filtered out by them.
I hoe this explains it OK for you.

No, FBA isn't a dropship technique. It's way better than that.

The best thing to do is to buy in bulk - with great margins, and send them to the distribution centers. (They'll tell you which ones to go to)

Also, so long as your supplier is compliant with Amazon's labeling rules, you can have them ship it directly there also.

I used to get pallets/shipping containers shipped to me, where I would then ship them out on-demand. FBA is a game changer.

However, I do still have them shipped to me as eBay has higher margins. And I sell a LOT more off eBay than I do Amazon.

Interesting comment. This indicates how different various products can be. For me I find that Amazon usually has the higher profits. In fact I do some of my FBA sourcing from Ebay, I buy items from Ebay and sell on them Amazon for good margins. I must admit that this tactic requires a lot of searching but it can be done on a regular basis, but only on certain items.

  • To be more clear: I have higher conversions on eBay, but a higher volume on Amazon.

The answer to your question "Can I sell [these] products [on] eBay" Isn't terribly clear.

For example, can you sell them based on their policies? Or can you sell them based on economics?

If you want to know if you're 'allowed' to sell on eBay, then you'd simply contact them and/or read their policy section.

On the second aspect, you need to ask yourself if you 'should' list the products.

I always wonder a few things that help me make this determination.

#1 - Is the item legal
#2 - Is the item profitable. (Based on actual numbers and not guesses. Too many people lose money by not doing this correctly.)
#3 - Am I selling something people want?
#4 - Does the product improve someone's life/does it make them happy?
