Hi Guys, I'm new to dropshipping, and I have a possible supplier I want to deal with, but they want to charge $199/yr in order for me to work with them. is this legit and a normal business practice?

Thanks!

No it is not normal. One of two things is happening.

    1. they are not a true distributor or wholesaler of the product and this is there way of getting some money out of you since their prices will be too high or...

    2. You can off as a newbie and they are throwing it out there since they know you are going to be a hassle.

If they are the only one you can find and they won't budge on the start up fee, then tell them you want that $199 to be applied to your first orders, or even better, you will just order $199 worth of stuff you will need anyway for reviews, photo's etc. You need to get something out of it besides just "a start up fee"

The only time I have paid an upfront fee is if something is private labeled and they need to cover the time to do logo'ing and such.

Have they given you access to their prices yet? If they have and they are competitive, see if you can apply the $199 to ordering product. If they won't give you their prices until you pay the fee, then just walk away. 90% of the time you will find their wholesale prices are higher than the retail prices on Amazon.

Thanks for the reply! They haven't given me access to their site or their prices. I have another wholesaler who did and who is not charging me anything, but they seem to have slightly less product, so I'll just go with them.

thanks again! I figured something was a bit "off". and yeah it was a $199/yr fee. it states on their website they do that, so i know it wasn't just me coming off as a newb.

Find Wholesale Distributors that don't mention anything about drop shipping on their website. Apply for a Reseller account and become approved and then ask them to dropship for you. It has worked for me 95% of the time.

Don't mention drop shpping until they approve your Reseller account. You have to build the business relationship first.

  • I'm pretty sure you're talking about WorldWideBrands anyway. There have been many things mentioned in the forum already about how terrible they are.

pardon me for my ignorant, very new here.

Can I check there's any difference between listing somebody's product (with inflated price) in your own site and when you received the order, you then make the purchase on the original product's site having the mailing address to what the customer had provided vs dropshipping.

also, what are the things to look out for when sourcing for dropshipper? Country, delivery, cost?

I would never pay a "dropshipper" to dropship their products. It is not usual business practice for a dropshipper to do that.
