Why do web designers charge monthly for shopping carts?

Hello Everyone,

I have a question. I notice some web designers charge monthly fees from $29 to $199 per month for a website that they have built with free software, such as Magento. Could someone tell me why they do this? If someone has magento they can just install it themselves and pay no fees (besides hosting).

I am a web designer but unless I have a developer licence for a software that allows me to use for clients, I could not charge monthly fees for carts etc. May be they are paying for maintenance and development fees ?

Thanks for your reply. IMO I don't think it's fair to charge someone for free software so it must be hosting and development fees.

Well that depends on what they're offering. If you're asking a web developer to do the work and maintenance for you, you surely can't expect them to do it for free.
