Which e-Commerce solution is best

I was wondering which e commerce solution is best. I currently sell on eBay, and I am now wanting to expand and start my own e Commerce store so I can add another revenue stream.

I have been looking at many options: hosted versus self hosted ones, etc. But I do not know what is the best way to go. I hear a lot of good things about shopify, Bigcommerce, WooCommerce, and others.

One big thing I would like the choice of e commerce thing to do is allow me to make my product pages look exactly the way i want. By that I mean I want the ability to add a lot of images, add videos that help sell the product, etc. Ability to add videos to the product pages is actually a necessity.

So any advice would be helpful. Thanks to all.

What are your thoughts about using a program like Xara or Serif, and then using ecwid for the products themselves on the page? Has anyone had any luck with this? or would that be a bad idea?

what about using something like weebly e commerce?

I want something that isnt too hard to use but also gives me a lot of control over the design look of the site

I am not sure what is meant here. When it comes to selling items online you cannot get any bigger than Amazon.

It was my understanding that Amazon FBA is simply when you store your products in Amazons fulfilment centers and then whether you sell on amazon or your own site then amazon fulfills the order for you.

I currently sell on ebay. its good, but bay alone gets 9% of my final value fee (paypal another 2.9% +35 cents. If i were to sell on Amazon, Amazon told me they get 15 percent minimum of the sale. To me that is way to much. My goods are low margin goods. Yes Amazon makes you use their processing for payments, so in that respect my total on ebay for comparison would be 11.9% plus 35 cents. So i would be losing another 3 percent if i were to sell on Amazon. This is why i have been steering away from Amazon. And this is why I am looking for an e commerce store as my second channel. I know i will have to work on driving traffic there, but in the long run I will make more money per transaction by far, especially since my goods avereage around $160 and have low margins after ebay fees (ebay makes much more than i profit on each sale.)

You can try Shopify.com . They have plans according to your requirements. You don't need to think about hosting , security issues etc. Good choice if you are not using woocommerce or don't want to face all the hassles on your own.

    Hi,
Yesterday, today, tomorrow and the days to comes, I will recommend that you use woo-commerce for establishing any online shop that you desire to. Having used the plugin for several years, I can comfortably say that it is the best decision and choice I made that up to today I never live to regret.
The plugin gives you total freedom when it comes to customization of your website. This makes its possible for you to add videos and change the entire look and feel with much easy. Don't be worried even with the fact that you are clueless when it comes to coding.
You must also know that woocommerce plugin is available for free and all you need is download it and then make an installation.

Ok I will give it a try. But I have a few questions, since i really don't know much about woocommerce or wordpress.

First I realize I need to download wordpress, but do I download it from wordpress.com or wordpress.org? The two sites look a little different so im not sure which is correct to download it from .

Second, Can I download it to my commputer and build the site there and then install it to a hosting account when finished ? or should I just install it to a webhost first?

I would suggest you to check Woocommerce as its really customisable. Also go for a web hosting company as if you for self-hosting, you cannot really focus on your business. Your website can go down for indefinite period, you need to hire resources for maintaining the server and it would be expensive.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I have tried most of the hosted trials so far, and For them i am trying to decide between big commerce and volusion. Not sure why, but I thought shopify was a little too simplistic looking on the product pages, like it didnt have many features stock.

I am also now looking at some of the self hosted ones. Magento seems like it has a whole lot of features, but a little intimidating. I was also looking at presta shop, open cart, and os commerce.

I do have another question now related to self hosted ones. I would obviously just get a hosting account and have the ecommerce program installed to it. But to be PCI Complient, do i have to worry about using a shared hosting account or do i need vps? I would obvioulsy get an SSL, I can either use paypal with it integrating into the checkout page or a merchant account. I was just wondering if there is anything I need to worry about to make it PCI complient.

Also is there a greater expense in the long run of running like a magento, open cart etc, to maintain it that i am not thinking of?

My business runs several ecommerce sites and also manages sites for others.

Personally speaking I would use an open source solution that has a huge number of users because then you get access to better modules and extensions to add functionality that will make a difference in the long term.

As for SSL you can be on a shared host but this is a very valid point if you require the security and you will struggle to find out good information in this area...as we did.

It helps if you have a host that is responsive to your needs and will guide you when you have issues or just need help. See my preferred hosting and we run PCI compliant sites on their platform.

Speed is another issue because you want to have a fast loading site that functions flawlessly.

My preference is Opencart running some of the Isenselabs modules that improve sales and results.

Skynet hosting continues to impress with speed and more importantly service https://skynethosting.net

If you use the nitropack from Isenselabs and couple it with Cloudflare you get some seriously fast service delivering your content.

The nitropack will improve your speed scores with Google out of this world and you can run shared ssl with Skynet without issue.

Opencart integrates with so many payment gateways and has a huge community support.

We tend to customise our own store designs but the off the shelf products are more than adequate for most applications.

        As for ongoing costs.

Good hosting is essential and choose a local sever for your needs...that's why I like Skynet.

If you decide to use a service like Cloudflare although they have free services (which we also use) expect to pay to improve security and service. ( can start with free)

I would also suggest using an outbound mail filter service...skynet uses "mailchannels" which really helps with keeping your transactional emails off the spam lists.

There are other services like this but the support from skynet is second to none and I have hosting on several other providers and have used many over the years.

Most of the money sites end up getting migrated to skynethosting because they keep delivering.

Even when you FTP you can seriously notice the speed difference.

Magento is another good choice as is WooCommerce on wordpress.

        Hope that helps some.

        Best regards,

        Ozi

I think Magento is the best platform for developing online shopping portal as it comes with many inbuilt features.
    1. It allows automatic updating for any ecommerce website. This feature is not available in other e- commerce platforms.
    2. It is easy for the customers to search and purchase products and services through
    3. Magento offers customers with highly interactive shopping experience to choose from large store.

This means that you want to have your own well managed ecommerce website with 100% rights on every code and page. Then you can carry around a total extensive research so that you find the hosting company that is within what you have been looking for. You can then choose to have someone design and develop the site for you or choose the option of wordpress. A purchased theme always comes with support which you can use to fine tune the website.

    Hey,

If you want to expand your business & wants to develop your own Ecommerce store, then you should go for self-hosted platform Magento. Magento & WooCommerce both are self-hosted, but I would prefer Magento because you can set-up your huge Ecommerce store easily with great functionality without much technical knowledge.

If you would like complete control over the design and the code base for features and functionality then Magento CE or EE may be better suited for your needs.

And between Magento CE vs EE, it really boils down to all the customizations you are looking for. If you implement several customizations on your CE that match the EE features, then it may be better to pay a little more and get EE because those features would be part of the native code base. If you are able to share a list of all your customizations, then perhaps we can give you a better assessment and answer as to which platform makes most sense.

We've used and still do recommend Bigcommerce, and unless you really have coding down, go with something hosted vs self hosted, or you're opening yourself up to a world of security issues. Bigcommerce has recently raised their prices; they have a great shopping cart, but they have a lot of limitations, so keep your needs in mind.

Wordpress has it's ups and downs for a website, but I really like it's advantages. It really can be as simple or complicated as you want to make it on yourself. There are some great free plugins, templates, and with little to no coding, you can customize a lot for a website. There's also a tremendous amount of DIY information on Wordpress that is free and available.

I would go with wordpress + woocommerce. HIGHLY customizable with plugins and coding so adding videos to product pages would be pretty easy. Also wordpress + woocommerce has TONS of support.

However if you find a self hosted solution too complicated and dont want to deal with hassles of updating plugins, adding ssl cert to site, and dealing with random minor issues that may popup AND your only building one shop then by all means go with Shopify.

Shopify from what I hear is very simple to use and highly customizable as well. There is actually a marketplace on themeforest.net in which shopify themes are sold. In addition shopify has some very powerful addons... unfortunately the only downfall is that they will cost you extra per monthly basis... reason being why this option is good if you only plan on building one shop.

Also just as a tip for whatever platform you choose, look for plugins/addons that synchronize your ecom store with your ebay store and also look for plugins/addons that can turn your store into a mobile app. This could significantly boost sales if done/marketed right.

I have used enough Shopify but now thinking about to change my mind. What I extremely dislike in Shopify is that you cannot build multiple stores within one admin account. You have to create each one new account for each one new store. I know, there are some tricks where you can froward and redirect multiple stores to one shopping cart, but it will be still 1 account=1 shop model, whatever you call it. I really dislike the backup functions of Shopify: only now and only one developer offers shopify site backup in app store and it's still not 100% functionally. This means that you still have to do manually collections and other things once you want to copy your site or multiply stores to an other domain. I'm rather more familiar with Joomla then with WP, but no one here says about Joomla as a platform for e-comm. Is it worth? Or better to use WP+woocommerce?
P.S. I have tried Bigcommerce and imho it's more complicated than Shopify and it's missing lot of features Shopify has.

Joomla may have some ecommerce plugins ... never looked into it. I found Joomla to be the biggest learning curve of any platform to learn to use and wouldn't touch it again if my life depended on it. I built several really nice Joomla sites to flip and the customer support to the buyers who didn't know how to use Joomla was a nightmare. Never used it since.

I'm using Shopify and it's probably the best I have come across. Takes some getting used to as the building is unlike anything else I have seen. Great once you get to know it though.
The best thing is that they have awesome support 24/7 you can message, email or phone and get things sorted.

There are a number of apps which can be added for free or monthly subscription. Some really good ones that make a bit impact.

I have used Actinic / Sellerdeck and really don't recommend them. Seriously overpriced and if you add their support and hosting, you need to be selling massive volumes to make it work.

EKM Powershop, good, limited in what you can do with it though, but great service during office hours and developing all the time. Recommended

Cube Cart is very good too, I haven't had much experience with it, but a serious ecommerce mate of mine is doing very well. I think probably not for beginners.

    Good luck with it

There are several options out there which are user friendly for both the admin and shoppers. I would recommend you to use SHOPIFY for this purpose. There are several reason to which i have recommended this.
First of All you can easily make small changes like editing Home page or product pages. This is only possible in platform like Shopify.
Secondly there are a lot of plugins available that can be used in order to engage your audience like plugins for email marketing etc.
If you are running your Ebay store then you also need a centralized inventory system. I dont know if Shopify has this functionality, but this could be possible with some help from developer.

Dear, there are multiple platforms which you can utilize to grow your business like: alibaba, flipkart, snapdeal, ebay etc. They all provides limited customization features. But this is sure that they all are going to help you increase your sales.

Basically, you are looking for a solution that is super customizable; something that can support growth and is flexible to accommodate your changing / progressive business needs. Each of the solutions that you have mentioned is recognized for one aspect but fall short in the other. Say for example, if you are stressing at extremely flexible customization with out of the world store front options, Shopify will be great. If you are looking forward to accommodating growth in your business, Magento and Bigcommerce can be apt. However, each of these solutions comes at a cost, none of which is very forgiving.

I will suggest that you choose your solutions after an in depth understanding of the facilities that they offer and tally it with your priorities. By far, Shopify seems best for your immediate interests. If you wish to choose Shopify and push growth in your store in different e commerce marketplaces, you can always seek assistance from companies like ChannelSale for affordable all inclusive integrations.

If you want to get a store up and running quickly without any hassle I would go Shopify, then BigCommerce. I think they're priced similarly. I have a lot of experience with Shopify and I don't think I'd move to anything else. I love Shopify's drag and drop editor. Makes it easy.
