Re-charge a card after settlement?

Client has authorize.net. She wants to be able to credit or debit a customer's charge card after settlement. For instance, an item is out of stock, the customer agrees to a different item, my client wants to refund or add the difference onto the card with a new transaction, without taking the card info from the customer a second time.

Authorize.net's way of handling this is to change the original charge to a new amount. My client wants a separate transaction that adds or subtracts.

I had thought the customer information management did this but I was wrong.

Anyone know of a good merchant gateway processor that has an ad hoc re-charge capacity?
