Sourcing big ticket item from China - help

Hi everyone,

I need to buy a machine for my business that's going to run me about 20K. I have a couple of questions about how to best protect myself:

1) What payment terms do you recommend?

2) How can I protect myself from a situation where I buy the machine and it breaks in a few weeks? I need to be confident that I have genuine recourse if the machine breaks.

Any other tips appreciated. Thanks everyone.

Plus if you're going to part with that sort of cash to a Chinese company you have never visited that likely has a Gold badge on Alibaba of 8 years yet it was founded 2 years ago.

I'd employ a sourcing agent for a few hundred dollars to go and check the company and products for you. Get him to oversee the paperwork and vouch for them. Ensure the payment was made in escrow only to get released after delivery and successful installation.

      Just google Chinese sourcing agent.

If the machine was manufactured locally/nationally. Opt for a cash on installation and training + 30/60 days for a bed in period. Stump up a 20% deposit. See what they are willing to offer.

You should contact suppliers, start conversations, and eventually make a trip to inspect the product and the factory.
If you cannot travel to China or if you don't have the type of expertise needed to properly evaluate whether a "machine" is good or not, you should seek for top inspection companies specialized on your specific industry.
A reliable source here on the WF recommended me the services of prestigious names such as

    SGS SGS - Industrial Manufacturing
    Intertek Intertek
TUV TÃœV SÃœD Global Website - Testing, Inspection & Certification | TÃœV SÃœD

BTW: You shouldn't really try to "buy" a 20k machine the same way people like me buy $2-$3 products from b2b sites...

Is there any way you can view the machine? Ask the vendor if they have shipped any similar machines to anyone in your area.

I'm going to visit the factory to view the machine in person and make sure it can do what I need. I'm mainly concerned about what to do if the machine breaks after 2 weeks of use. I don't have much faith in a Chinese warranty being honored.
