I have product I would like to try and sell online. It seems to me with ebay you can only sell in your home country and not to the rest of the world. is that correct?

I was thinking of setting up a store using square space or shopify to sell the goods.

What would be the best way to go?

You can sell to the rest of the world on ebay, you do this by offering word wide postage

eBay tends to be very price-oriented and with the high fees, so you won't make as much as with your own eCommerce site. It takes quite awhile to get your own website to rank, though.

That said, eBay (and Amazon) gets TONS of traffic and is an excellent place to get immediate sales. If you are private labeling a product, both eBay and Amazon are also great places to test the market before investing in a huge quantity of inventory.

In the end, I think the best strategy is to do both with most product lines.

May I ask what kind of product it is? If it's a private label product then I think amazon and ebay are a perfect choice. If your product is vintage in nature and hand crafted then I would suggest to go for Etsy.Last, you can sell your product worldwide through ebay.

I might would use eBay to validate the idea but my goal would be to have my own ecommerce store. The reason being is you are at the mercy of eBay, whereas if you have your own ecommerce store, you have more control.

You can ship to most countries selling on eBay, as long as you apply the Global Shipping Programme (GSP) on your account.
Concerning your second question; eBay is likely your best option to start selling online if you want to keep the initial cost as low as possible.
With eBay, you can actually test the profitability and demands of the products before investing your money on ecommerce store.
