Im just starting to sell my PL item on Amazon. I have zero reviews so far. I was thinking about giving some cool, cheap item that i got from alibaba for 1 dollar, not my main product. I think that will raise my review on that one item. My question is, will that get my 'main' product higher in the rankings?

    No.

The effect would be infinitesimal (see below, portfolio size does appear to have some importance though)

Amazon have an algorithm for ranking products searched. Just like google's algorithm for ranking it's a 'secret' guarded carefully by amazon itself.

Having spent a lot of time selling on amazon, and testing/experimenting with others doing the same, a handful of us have a decent feel for some of the individual elements of their algo. It includes number of reviews, quality of reviews, sales volume, sales density, conversion rates, portfolio size and a whole lot more.

It appears to have well over 50 elements. These elements are each given individual weightings of which we think we know some of the main partialities.

The amazon algo shifts fairly frequently and just 2 weeks ago a major change occurred that disrupted rankings (hint, it's in your listing's back end keyword identification).

Hope this helps. Good luck with your venture.

The answer is no, reviews impact your conversion rate much more then they do your actual amazon rank. Once you become one of the sellers with most reviews in your category it can impact your sales because people will see you as an authority in your category but by than your rank will already be good enough.

Optimize your listing first, set up some coupons to jump start the sales, start using Amazon ads and your rank will slowly but surly go up.
