I'm really not looking forward to a one-word answer here, rather this could be a comprehensive discussion on color theory. Anyone who is doing business on the Internet should share their thoughts here.

Have any cool A/B test results worth sharing?

To be honest there is standard color for a checkout button for an E-commerce Site. It simply depends on the design of your website which one is fits to your site.

You can test different color for a checkout button and see which color Grab more Attention and create a win win situation for you. Then you can finalize the best one.

Honestly, this has been split test to death and a definitive answer has never surfaced. It seems as if different colored buttons work in one niche and not so well in others. Generally speaking, men respond well to colors that are different than the ones that women respond well to, for instance.

We split test button color on all of our websites. One principle that seems to hold for all of them is that call to action buttons work best when they clash with your site's color scheme. When the blend in too well, they don't demand attention.

There might be a one word answer to it...

    Depends

And since it might depend on numerous factors, it'd be hard to simply come up with one color without any testing. Of all the rules I've ever read about CTAs, having a contrasting CTA makes the most sense to me. But there's a lot more to be considered.

Suggesting a Red, or Orange or perhaps Green, blindly, would be wrong. The color of the CTA needs to work in adherence with the rest of the site. And I'd say this includes the niche of the website too.

For example a Green CTA might make more sense for Grocery based Ecommerce, assuming the website's theme doesn't camouflage the CTA.

While working for my previous organization, we ran a PPC campaign for one of our clients. Education niche. The image ad wasn't performing okay-ish, so we decided to Split test the thing. Now the first thing anyone reading about CRO, thinks of testing is the CTA. Or apparently it was, in our case.

Anyway, we ran three different CTA colors - Red, Green, Blue and watched. Personally, I was betting for Blue. It seemed somewhat more soothing with the niche. My Boss bet for Green. Winner?

It was my boss. I didn't have a logical explanation as to why, but he did.

Do you know what did we did after that?

We ran a split test for the background image...and then the Ad text...

    Hi silveroaks,

There Is No Single Best Button Color

This is a topic that has been discussed, dissected and analysed by CRO (Conversion Rate Optimization) folks for more than a decade. There is a lot of data, arguably more empirical data than any other CRO test. After all of this testing we have learned there is no single best button color.

The color that helps improve conversions the most is usually whatever color makes the button stand out visually from other elements on the page.

Since every page design is different, the color that stands out the most varies accordingly.

    Button Color Best Practices

So this begs the question: "What is button color best practices?"

In marketing our business it is important to gather data that improves our results as quickly as possible. Prioritizing marketing experiments that are likely to gain insights with the most significant lift in conversions is optimal. Testing button colors is usually a waste of valuable time because you can follow best practices to get very close to the best performing button color without performing any testing. There is already substantial data to verify this assertion.

After many years of testing nearly all CRO experts come to the same conclusion, the most effective button color is the color that makes the button stand out from it's surrounding design elements.

There is a science based around colors that provides a convenient tool called a color wheel. After assessing the primary colors used in your page design you can simply select the complimentary color using the color wheel to find the button color that will stand out the most. You can save yourself days of testing and start off with a color that works effective just by selecting a complimentary color from the color wheel.

I'm not suggesting that you should never test button colors, indeed you should. It's just not as high of a priority as testing layout designs, headlines, value propositions, product descriptions, etc. You can easily select a great performing button color simply by using a complimentary color to your theme's primary color, saving time for more important testing.

As long as the background color (of the page, not the button) is white or light in color, I'd suggest Green (more of a brighter neon shade) or Blue. Red is an option if it fits your theme.
