Let's say you are looking to sell digital products that, upon confirmation of purchase, are sent directly to the customer. As a simple example let's say it's a website that sells ebooks, or game keys, or whatever....just purely digital.

What is the go-to software out there? Is it a max? is there one that stands out above the rest?

OK, I can feel your pain and my reply might make it more challenging (only because there are dozens of options. I am going to share with you my experience of launching and operating a shopify site. Before I begin with pros and cons of Shopify, I want you to know that many ecommerce sites are available, but none that seem to be
    - Easy to install
    - Easy to Operated
    - Easy to interface with other software components (e.g. quickbooks, etc)
Shopify is actually a series of ecommerce solutions which offer a turn key system which provides PCI Compliance
Make sense? Cool. Let’s look at the pros and cons of shopify.
    Pros
The biggest issues ecommerce providers face are 1. Speed in processing orders and 2. Providing extra layers of security to remain PCI compliant and process credit cards. You can easily outsource this to one of many vendors, including PayPal or Google Wallet, but using a 3rd party often removes the healthy control that is required to ensure products in a small-medium size business.
Shopify also provides stellar customer service. They will help you at a fraction of the cost when creating the site.
Finally…Marketing…Shopify offers the essentials to create traffic to your site. You might need to use some additional methods , but Shopify will help you reach out to your market segments.
    Cons
Using Shopify is not without challenges, primarily with pricing.
It is expensive when comparing it to others in the market. It may appear at first glance it is the few dollars in additional fees depending upon the subscription level, but the real difference is in the transaction fees.
Shopify has actually restructured their pricing, but still are more expensive.

In addition to Shopify, you can also use BigCommerce or 3DCart for easily setting up digital product sales and downloads. They all are set up for this and do a good job.

You could also use WordPress with WooCommerce, but we caution against this because it is more difficult to set up and you have to rely on plugins and WordPress, itself, that constantly needs security updates which result in broken plugins, making your website inoperable. The tiny bit of money you save per month with Wordpress/Woo is simply not worth the headaches.
