.com domains vs new gTLD domains

Hey Warriors,

I wonder what opinions do you share on the new gTLD domains (.store, .supplies, etc) in the eCommerce business, in terms of SEO, domain name reliability, sales conversions and long term investment?

I must admit I do feel uncomfortable purchasing from a non .com website, but could be that it's just an old dogma that will eventually vanish in time. There are plenty good gTLD domains and it seems that google is ranking them just as much as old domains.

Your thoughts?

Most of the time, we prefer a .com domain name simply because that is how people remember domain names - something especially important if yours is a website that caters to repeat customers or referrals. We do have a few websites that are not .com extensions on the new TLDs because there are some incredible names you can get with them and those stores are not ones where we expect repeat business (i.e. a store selling grandfather clocks or pool pumps).

I'm not sure if the average internet user feels the same way as you about purchasing from non-.com TLDs. We seem to sell a pretty decent amount of stuff from our non-.com TLD websites. Of course, I'm not sure the average internet user even looks at the URL of places they buy from, either!

You are right, I guess most people don't really bother about the url.. I have researched more into it and it does seems that in terms of conversions and SEO it doesn't hold much difference. I do count on returning customers and your point is extremely valid.

Thanks for the input! Much appreciated.
