Starting an Amazon FBA Business - Please advise!

Hi there,

I'm highly interested in starting a business on Amazon. Specifically, I want to start a business private labelling products and redistributing them on Amazon, using Fulfillment By Amazon. I'd like startup costs to be in the ballpark of $2000-$2500.

I'm looking for some free guidance on the best routes to make this happen, such as:

1) What software should I use for searching potential products? (Is Jungle Scout any good?)
2) What sites/companies to use to design said product and logo?
3) What sites/companies do I use to find a reliable manufacturer(one that can slap my label on a relatively generic product?)
4) Can I sell as an individual or do I need to start an LLC? At what point do I need to start an LLC?
5) Honestly, in what order of the above questions should I organize my progress in? What should I start first?

If I've left off any potential questions that may help me further my progress in this endeavor, I would greatly appreciate it. Any and all advice will be received with great appreciation.

    Hi Matt,

You would be best to look up Jim Cockrum and join his forum or facebook group.- My Silent Team

Get his PAC - proven amazon course as it has everything you need to know and then some.

I think included for the price of admission is Walter Hay's Sourcing from China Book which is also worth it's weight in gold.

Walter is part of this forum as [importexport] - search out his posts.

The above advice from me is free but you would need to pay Jim for his training.

You will save yourself so much time and headaches if you get PAC and if you don't get PAC get Walter's book on product sourcing as it will save you a ton of money and help you avoid the pitfalls when product sourcing.

    Best regards,

    Ozi

I am in complete agreement with Ozi above as Jim Cockrum's Proven Amazon Course was instrumental when I started my Amazon FBA business. Just a couple of thoughts. Starting with private labeling is a bit more complicated to simply starting to sell already well known products. I use camelcamelcamel to learn of a products sales history. Also - start small and learn to operate under Amazon rules and procedures. They are not too complicated but they need to be followed. You can build your business once you learn how to operate your FBA business. Your Amazon seller account will have a lot of features to assist you and Amazon's support is outstanding, very helpful.

I was also checking into Amazon FBA, what threw me off of it was that "LEGALLY", you have to have a sales tax license AND collect and remit sales tax to EVERY jurisdiction that Amazon has a "presence" in. In other words, Amazon has warehouses all over the country...Have fun with that...

For Amazon software tools, try out all the ones you're interested in, most will offer a free trial (avoid the ones that require your credit card details), and assess which is the best value for what you need.

Also take advantage of free tools! Ones I use regularly would be Google Keyword Planner + Sonar ( Amazon keyword research)& CamelCamelCamel (BSR history)

I also make regular use of camelcamelcamel and I find it very useful to see the selling history/frequency of sales and the price history. It is very interesting and useful to see how much a price may fluctuate over time.

Hey great you planned to start Amazon business but just to keep you informed based on Web retailer Research data ** only 9% of Amazon Sellers make less than $10,000 per year, 16.7% of Amazon sellers make over a million dollars. And a very small 2.1% make over 10 million per year in revenue from Amazon's marketplace.
    63% only sell on marketplaces
There are many advantages to selling through online marketplaces, but there are also risks.
    So do your homework well.

And to answer few of your question:
    1) you can use JS or SellerPrime to do product research.
    2) you can use any landing page site design for your website and make sure to register your brand.
    3) Alibaba can be best sourcing option but try 1688 also to get wholesale prices in Chinese market so you can bargain better.
    4) Make sure you optimize listing and focus more on getting organic sales. Use trending keywords with less competition.
    5) Use tool to track every progress you are making in your Amazon business few tools where you can try out are SellerPrime, camelcamelcamel, JS etc

    Happy Selling!

I only quoted point 3 because the other parts of the post are outside my area of expertise.

Alibaba has a huge number of listings by traders falsely claiming to be manufacturers. If you want to get best prices you should go direct to the manufacturer.

After all, where do the traders buy before adding a big margin and selling to newbies who think they are buying direct?

1688 is for people who read Chinese. If you try to use a translated version you will find a lot of it quite amusing and the rest of it quite confusing. Many people will try to sell you their services as agents to buy on 1688, but that can cost a lot more than the commission they quote. (Ask me how on my thread: Ask Me Anything About Product Sourcing And Importing For Profit. ― Veteran Importer Here.

I teach how you can ignore huge MOQs on Alibaba, but the MOQs on 1688 are massive and rarely negotiable.

I thought some of the translated stuff from 1688 might be of interest to Warriors, so here are some examples:

This skirt and fire, who wear the United States!
The thigh is not only a woman's patent
The bra picks from 6 o'clock
Teach you a simple method of nursing water purifier
Socks with these types do not miss
Electrolytic capacitor knowledge of the whole solution!

Good luck in buying from suppliers on 1688 !!!!
