    Try to look for something that you can actually provide value to the customer. Perhaps something you're interested in yourself. Throwing a random product on Amazon isn't going to cut it, especially with the competition.

    As mentioned above the Amazon best seller list can be helpful. I also use camelcamelcamel to research the sales history and previous selling prices of specific products on Amazon.
