    I only know about small business which are employing less than 10 workers. I have not crossed a small e commerce before. Small e commerce can also be a business with less than 10 employee. If you can grow through the time, you can employ more for customer support, sm managers, delivery man (if you deliver) etc.

    In Australia any business with less than 10MM turnover is considered a small business.

    What is the purpose of this question? How will knowing the answer make you any money? Are you doing a report for school or something?

    There is no such thing as "small eCommerce". I've been in this business for more than a decade and have never heard the term used once.

      I dont understand how have you not come accross this q before? What is a small e Commerce mean is that what makes a e Commerce website large/ complex or small/simple ? Is it based on the number of products? I am sure one with 50 products isnt the same as the one with 1000. This is my q what determines the size of an e commerce?

    I would count parcels shipped monthly- than up to 1000 can be considered as small, after 2000 you can call yourself as middle size- all depends on the market but level of 1000parcels a month is small e-commerce.

    Depends on what type of business you are running and the system you choose

    Many clients I have currently have an issue with Integration (which is why we built AlphaBetaCommerce | Wordpress Enterprise Solution ). Specifically I find there are isues with shipping, warehouse, and inventory management.

    Many ecommerce solutions don't adapt well to real life business processes. Most of the time you have to find a custom solution.

    For example, I remember painfully looking for an an off the shelf inventory management system that would sync seamless with Quickbooks Enterprise (cloud), our two overseas facilities inventory management system, integrate with the english ecommerce website, and localized Japanese website . And this was for a small business under 1 million in revenue.

    There was no solution, so I had to custom build one. Essentially you will always run into issues, but the question becomes which combination of software allows you to avoid the majority of issues you will run into with ecommerce.

      It is a question that does not matter. It's like asking what size do you consider a large tree to be? The answer will be different for someone with a small yard than it will be for a forest ranger and it is irrelevant. I'll take the small tree that bears fruit, not the large one that is dying.

      Who cares what someone thinks is large or small? We've had sites with thousands of products that only made a few hundred dollars per month and sites with less than ten products that made $10,000/month profit. What matters is how much money you make and whether it satisfies your needs.

        Hi Dave, as much as I like you, i think you are missing the point here.
        When someone asks you to build a eCommerce for them, how much would you charge? Well, it depends on how big the project is.... This is my question, what's conisdered to be a big eCommerce? DUH!

          Actually, that is the first time you mentioned anything about quoting a store building project, so I apologize for not knowing that is what you were talking about. Apparently I am not the only one who missed that point, considering the other replies you have received.

          That said, I don't know any company that quotes building eCommerce sites on something as vague as "big", "medium" or "small". They typically ask for the number of products, the number of categories, the types of other pages you will want created (Terms & Conditions, Privacy, Resource Guides, etc.), whether you need a logo and banners created, etc. and then they issue you a quote based on the total number of pages and/or images they are going to have to create.

          We no longer offer site building services but I'd be charging at least $20 per page to make it worth my time.
